EastEnders airs tragic plea for Billy Mitchell in Lola cancer storyline

EastEnders spoilers follow.

EastEnders aired some heartbreaking scenes tonight (May 17), as Lola Pearce received more devastating news in her cancer storyline.

As Lola woke up in the hospital, with Billy Mitchell, Ben and Jay Brown at her side, a doctor came in revealed that her palliative chemotherapy treatment hadn't had the desired effect and the tumour had spread.

"We always knew the success rate of this chemotherapy cycle could be low, but it was absolutely worth a try..." she explained. "I'm so sorry, but we feel we've reached the end of the road in terms of treatment. I can't really give you a definitive answer. We're talking weeks rather than months."

Lola tried her best to hide how devastated she was by the news once Lexi arrived. However, in the corridor with Billy, she confided in him that she was terrified that even if she lived long enough, she may lose her cognitive functions.

Lola then made a desperate plea to Billy.

"What if I couldn't recognise Jay anymore? Or Lexi? I couldn't bare that. I don't wanna be a person just laying in a bed who can't do anything... no dignity," she said, tearfully. "Yesterday, when you found me, you promised me that you'd help me. I want you to... It has be on my terms. I need your help."

"I didn't mean that, I can't do that," he replied. "It's illegal."

Back in the hospital room, Lola promised Lexi that she'd be well enough to attend a school open day in a few weeks.

Heartbroken, Billy returned to the room when Lola was alone and agreed that there was "no need to put Lexi through all this" and agreed that he would help her with the end of her life.

"If this is how you want it to be, then I'll make it happen," he said. "But you have to tell Jay. He deserves that."

EastEnders airs Monday to Thursdays at 7.30pm on BBC One, with episodes dropping earlier in the day on BBC iPlayer.
