EastEnders' Ben Mitchell to struggle with Lexi in death aftermath

EastEnders spoilers follow.

Lola Pearce-Brown's final scenes in EastEnders air tonight (May 31), leaving a heartbreaking void in Albert Square.

Lola was told that she only had a few weeks to live earlier this month, and despite his best efforts to find alternative treatment for her in the US, Ben Mitchell has to come to terms with the fact he and their daughter Lexi will have to go on without her.

Tonight, Lola passes away, leaving behind her husband Jay, daughter and friends. In the wake of her death, next week Ben gives all his attention to Lexi.

Having sold The Arches to Sharon Watts, who bought the site for Keanu Taylor to set him up with a business, he has lots of time to dedicate to his grieving daughter.

It might be the Mitchell blood, but Ben finds it tricky to open up and process all that has gone on over the last few months.

To get out of the house and to spend time with his daughter, he takes Lexi for ice cream and hopes the thought of seeing Callum is enough to encourage her out.

However, the idea of ice cream does not win over Lexi, and she just wants to stay at home to see Jay and to get into bed.

Unsure what to do, Callum recommends that he stays strong and be brave about Lola when it comes to Lexi, adding that his daughter needs time and space to grieve and to talk about her mother.

Later, Ben has an emotional afternoon with Jay and Lexi, and following advice from Callum encourages Lexi to open up and talk about her mum and allow her to grieve however she needs.

Jay, struggling to keep it together, invites Kim and Billy over to help him sort out items for Lola's memory box with Ben.

It becomes clear that Jay is not in a good place, and as his friends show him love and support and try to help give him the strength to go on, the grief of the past week becomes all too much.

EastEnders airs on Mondays - Thursdays at 7.30pm on BBC One. The show also streams on BBC iPlayer.
