EastEnders brings back a classic character after nearly 34 years

EastEnders spoilers follow.

EastEnders has confirmed plans to bring back classic character Duncan Boyd after nearly 34 years.

The BBC has confirmed that David Gillespie's character will return to Albert Square for the first time since he made a bittersweet departure in July 1989, as part of a short stint to air soon.

Back in the 1980s, Duncan was the curate of the local church and attempted to guide a teenage Sharon Watts through the turbulent break-up of her parents Den and Angie's marriage.

Sharon eventually fell for Duncan and while they were briefly engaged to be married, she would later call things off. In the summer of 1989, Duncan took a job away from the Square at a church in Wiltshire.

All these years later, Duncan will return to the Square when he's assigned to oversee the christening for Sharon and current beau Keanu Taylor's son Albie. Neither Sharon or Duncan realise the coincidence until they come face-to-face.

"I have to say what a pleasure it was being back in EastEnders reviving my role as Duncan after over 30 years of leaving the show – a little strange at first but 'nice strange'," David Gillespie said.

"The only people I knew were my old mates Letitia [Dean, who plays Sharon] and Gillian [Taylforth, who plays Kathy], but I was made to feel instantly at home by such a wonderful cast and great crew – lots of new friends. Fabulous!”

Producer Chris Clenshaw added: "It’s wonderful to welcome David back to the role of Duncan Boyd. Although we haven’t seen Duncan for over three decades, his character shares a romantic history with one of the show’s iconic matriarchs, Sharon. We’re delighted to have him back for a short while as he unknowingly stirs up drama between the happy couple.”

Duncan's reappearance in Walford will air later this month.

The soap most recently revisited some of its 1980s classic characters with the funeral of Dot Branning late last year, where Mary the Punk and Lofty Holloway were among those mourning Dot's tragic death.

Viewers were also finally given closure on groundbreaking LGBTQ+ couple Colin and Barry when they also turned up in Walford to say farewell to their friend Dot. Ian Beale even made a brief reappearance in spite of his exile.

EastEnders airs on Mondays - Thursdays at 7.30pm on BBC One. The show also streams on BBC iPlayer.
