EastEnders casts Bridgerton star to play off-screen character

EastEnders spoilers follow.

Bridgerton star David Sterne has landed a role in EastEnders as part of Aunt Sal's sendoff.

The veteran stage, screen and radio star has been cast as Aunt Sal's husband Harold Martin, who has been often referenced but never actually seen until now.

Harold will be among the mourners who reunite with the Mitchell family for the funeral of Sal Mitchell, the sister of Peggy Mitchell, following the real-life death of cast actress Anna Karen last year.

Teasing his guest appearance, David said: "I loved playing Harold as I felt like the storyline was really important in the context of the show and everyone was so wonderful and welcoming. The writing was brilliant so he was a joy to play.”

Producer Chris Clenshaw also touched on how viewers will be able to fill in gaps from Aunt Sal's backstory by finally meeting her husband.

"Everyone at EastEnders was truly saddened to learn of Anna Karen’s passing, and it was imperative that we gave Aunt Sal the send-off she deserved," the producer said.

"I’m delighted to welcome David Sterne to the guest role of Aunt Sal’s elusive husband, Harold Martin, as the Mitchell family gather together to say goodbye.”

In addition to playing Farmer Robert in the first season of Netflix's streaming hit Bridgerton, he has also appeared in Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire, Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest and Vikings across a career that spanned more than 40 years.

It was recently announced that Snatch and Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels actor Alan Ford will be appearing during the tribute to Aunt Sal as well.

EastEnders airs on Mondays - Thursdays at 7.30pm on BBC One. The show also streams on BBC iPlayer, where most episodes drop early at 6am ahead of their TV broadcast.
