EastEnders spoilers follow.

EastEnders will introduce a new character in an upcoming plot for Harvey Monroe, as he makes a new friend.

The soap has revealed that Doctors actor Bharti Patel will be joining the cast later this month, playing the guest role of Maya Houssain, and that she will be part of a new plot for Harvey.

When Maya first arrives in Walford next week, she sparks an unlikely friendship with cab driver Harvey as they bond over a mutual love of football.

Harvey is delighted to have made a new friend whom he shares an interest with, particularly now that Rocky Cotton and Mitch Baker have left Albert Square behind. But where could their friendship lead?

Maya will make her first appearance in the episode airing on Wednesday, May 29.

Patel is best known for playing midwife Ruhma Carter in Doctors and she's still a part of the soap's cast, until the show comes to an end later this year.

Harvey was most recently involved in Dean Wicks' cruel plot to damage the health of his daughter, Jade Masood, so that he could keep her in Albert Square, with Harvey trying to get to the bottom of Dean's underhand actions.

Next week's scenes will also see another Walford arrival, as villain Nish Panesar returns to the Square after a three-month absence.

The soap has already teased that Nish will return with a bombshell that will have a dramatic effect on the Panesars, with his son Ravi Gulati set to be particularly impacted.

EastEnders airs on Mondays - Thursdays at 7.30pm on BBC One. The show also streams on BBC iPlayer, where most episodes drop early at 6am ahead of their TV broadcast.
