EastEnders' Charlie Brooks teases Janine Butcher return with a twist

EastEnders favourite Charlie Brooks has opened up about a potential return to the soap.

Brooks has played Janine Butcher on the BBC One show on and off for two decades.

Her latest stint came to an end when she was imprisoned for covering up a crime that she had blamed on Linda Carter (Kellie Bright), as part of a dramatic storyline that led Mick Carter (Danny Dyer) to go missing, presumed dead.

Janine was last seen on screen at Christmas, but Brooks teased that we may not have seen the last of the fan-favourite.

She told The Sun: "She is always fun to play. I'm always interested in what she's doing and what's she's up to, so there's always a possibility."

However, Brooks revealed that if she did return to the soap, it would only be on a temporary basis.

"I couldn't play her constantly and I don't think anyone would want me to," she added, "I think somebody might actually kill me if Janine was always in their living rooms four times a week."

Meanwhile, the star is currently making a triumphant return to the stage on tour with the National Theatre’s adaptation of Neil Gaiman’s The Ocean at the End of the Lane.

Speaking about her "dream" role of Ursula, Brooks said: "I had no idea how much of a spectacle and theatrical journey this play would be when I was even in the rehearsal room.

"It can be scary at times. It can make you jump. It's a beautiful story of a young boy's self-discovery and dealing with trauma.

"To hear that immediate response from audiences, old and young, is quite fantastic."

EastEnders airs on Mondays - Thursdays at 7.30pm on BBC One. The show also streams on BBC iPlayer.
