EastEnders confirms new story for Howie Danes

EastEnders spoilers follow.

EastEnders has confirmed a new storyline for Howie Danes and his son Denzel.

In scenes airing next week, Howie is impressed when Denzel is shortlisted for 'The Walford Young Writers Competition' and takes him and Nugget out for a celebratory breakfast at the café.

But Denzel later admits to Nugget that he stole his story from a TV show he watched with Amy, and he begins to worry that he'll be caught out during his interview with the Walford Gazette.

Howie's pride in Denzel quickly fades when, during the interview, he realises his son is not being honest, but in order to save face, he goes along with it.

However, this backfires when Denzel ends up promising another interview with his grandparents, whom he claims are the inspiration behind his story.

Grasping at straws, Howie and Rocky enlist Patrick and Vi to play Denzel's grandparents – and they're a hit with the reporter.

In fact, the reporter is so taken with their false love story that she requests a follow-up interview, but can Patrick and Vi pull off another interview on their own?

Discussing the new storyline, Howie actor Delroy Atkinson explained how things "haven't been easy" between Denzel and his dad recently, so Howie jumps at the opportunity to support his son.

However, when Denzel's lies are exposed, Delroy says that Howie "hates it".

"He hates it first and foremost because he’s been put in this position where he was proud five minutes ago and now he’s not," he said. "But he wants to help Denzel because he feels guilty about being a bad dad so he tries to do what he can to help him sort it and find a solution."

Giving some more insight into Howie and Denzel's turbulent relationship, Delroy continued: "It’s been fractious to be frank. Howie gets things wrong and Denzel’s a regular teenager, and there’s just been a shift where it feels like problem after problem.

"So that's why Howie was so excited about this as it's the first time he’s seen something positive happen for Denzel and between them both, so he really wants to put in the effort to try and bond with son."

EastEnders airs on Mondays - Thursdays at 7.30pm on BBC One. The show also streams on BBC iPlayer.
