EastEnders inserts newly-filmed scene for Euro 2024

It's a big month for EastEnders fans who are into football as the BBC soap has just inserted a newly filmed scene to celebrate Euro 2024.

Following England's win against the Netherlands on July 10, the team have secured their place in the final against Spain, with the big game to be played at the Olympiastadion in Berlin on Sunday (July 14).

Ahead of the match, EastEnders has aired a surprise topical reference to the game against the Netherlands.

In the new scene, characters Martin Fowler, Alfie Moon and Harvey Monroe gather in the square to look back on the most exhilarating moments of the semifinal, sharing their hopes that it might actually be "coming home" this time after England lost to Italy in 2021.

"You think we can go all the way?" Harvey asks his mates in the scene, to which Alfie replies: "We dare to dream, my friend. Dare to dream!" before the trio hug it out and start chanting.

It's the second time this month that EastEnders has borrowed from current affairs. The soap aired a General Election-themed moment between Harvey and Ian Beale on July 4, with the two men exchanging their views about whether or not to go to the polls.

The series previously included other last-minute references to huge real-life events, namely the UK getting close to breaking the Eurovision curse with Sam Ryder in May 2022 and Queen Elizabeth II's death in September of that same year.

EastEnders airs on Mondays - Thursdays at 7.30pm on BBC One. The show also streams on BBC iPlayer, where most episodes drop early at 6am ahead of their TV broadcast.
