Howie and Denise try to reassure her, but Kim is adamant that prison could be on the cards.

Privately, Howie tells Denise they can’t afford to get counselling for Kim, even though she desperately needs it.

Wanting to help, Denise hands over £500 from her and Jack’s joint account in order to fund the sessions. However, Jack hits the roof when he realises the money is missing.

Discussing next week's scenes, Tameka Empson – who plays Kim – said: "She is beside herself. She really doesn’t want to go but she knows she has to do the right thing.

"Deep down there’s a feeling of 'this could be it' and she could go down for it. She’s trying to keep a brave face and she loves the fact that Denise is there – the Fox sisters through anything and everything.

"Denzel has been a real rock for Kim actually too. But she’s definitely very nervous and vulnerable. No Kim-ism will get her out of this and so she has to walk the walk."

Reflecting on the accident, Tameka added: "Denzel, luckily, was fine but she can’t get over the fact that she crashed the car and put him in that position.

"She’s worked herself up by replaying it over and over and everything is under a microscope at the moment. When there’s a bang, someone shouts or a loud noise, she automatically thinks it’s about her.

"There’s signs around her everywhere to say that she’s going down. She knows that Howie and Denise love her and they want the best for her but I think she has a little voice in her head that is saying, 'you could go down for this'."

EastEnders airs on Mondays-Thursdays at 7.30pm on BBC One. The show also streams on BBC iPlayer.
