EastEnders star Harriet Thorpe hints at dark times for Knight family

EastEnders spoilers follow.

EastEnders threw a massive spanner in the works last week, when it was revealed that new character George Knight's first wife wasn't as missing/dead as previously thought. She's very much alive, and she's actually none other than Cindy Beale!

Speaking to Inside Soap magazine, Harriet Thorpe, who plays Elaine Peacock (George's current wife), spoke about her character's reaction to the revelations and teases that there are dark times ahead for the new family on the Square.

"[Elaine] always holds on to being in the here and now, of course, people have other partners as you move through life and it's a waste of energy to dwell on that," she said.

"Elaine is a strong woman who isn't defined by anybody. She and George are grown-ups who are further down the conveyor belt of life, they accept each other for who they are and know what they want, and don't want.

"Her instinct is to support rather than let it destroy anything. Gina goes off the rails a bit but Elaine can see that her rage and anger hides another vulnerability of frailty. Elaine is the one to remind Gina and Anna through all of this that their father loves them, and to speak that truth. Her motto is: 'Get off the pity pot, get over it and crack a smile!'"

"Elaine is fearless and will always survive," the actress added in response to a question about 'tough times ahead' for the Knight clan. "Yes, life rocks you, but whatever's coming she is ready, darling!

"Elaine just gets on her surfboard and rides the wave, some waves are lovely and some are slightly rougher, but that's life..."

The bombshell episodes also re-introduced Thomas Law as Peter Beale once again, and featured another one-off appearance from Jacqueline Jossa as Lauren Branning.

EastEnders airs on Mondays - Thursdays at 7.30pm on BBC One. The show also streams on BBC iPlayer.
