EastEnders star Matt Di Angelo has addressed the death theories surrounding his character Dean Wicks, ahead of the anticipated Christmas murder plot.

The soap recently narrowed down the seven candidates who could be facing a shocking death on Christmas Day. Joining the soap's notorious villain on the possible chopping block are Jack Branning, Nish Panesar, Ravi Gulati, Rocky Cotton, Keanu Taylor and Phil Mitchell.

Dean recently reappeared on the Square to be near his daughter Jade, who has cystic fibrosis and needs a life-saving lung transplant — and has been inflicting torment ever since.

On whether his character would be wearing the dreaded cufflinks, Di Angelo teased: "If anyone deserves to wear the cufflinks, it's Dean, but I think the more people that have those cufflinks in the lead up to Christmas, the better..."

"Dean is very much back in the Square now trying to make his business work and take care of his sick daughter. He's trying his hardest to integrate into the community and make his business work," Di Angelo also said of his anticipated return.

After arriving at Halloween, Dean has been blackmailing sister-in-law Linda Carter, trying to force her to falsely clear his name after sexually assaulting her years ago.

"Dean very much thinks he's innocent — he truly believes that so he is surprised that people who did believe him before, now don't," the actor explained.

"So he's having to deal with that, and he is finding that the people of Walford are standing behind Linda so he wants to change their mind. He doesn't have a choice, he needs his life in Walford to work."

Ahead of the Christmas storyline, Di Angelo went on to explain how much it means to him to be a part of the festive antics.

"As a child, EastEnders was part of Christmas Day," he said. "It was part of the festivities just as much as the Queen's speech. The day was as much about turkey as it was the EastEnders Christmas episode and EastEnders itself isn't just a TV show, it's an institution I'm always very proud to be a part of."

EastEnders airs on Mondays - Thursdays at 7.30pm on BBC One. The show also streams on BBC iPlayer, where most episodes drop early at 6am ahead of their TV broadcast.
