"I'd like to say there is some hope," he said of a possible reconciliation. "But who knows what is going to happen? Ben and Callum will always have that glint in their eyes for each other."

The soap star also opened up about filming the rape scene and revealed the impact that the scene had on viewers.

"On the day Ben's rape episode aired, one of the charities we worked with said they had a big increase in calls," he said.

"It goes to show the power of soap, and it's amazing that EastEnders can give power to people who have felt so unheard," he added.

Bowden said that he felt a duty to survivors of sexual assault to tell the story accurately.

In recent scenes, Ben's secret was finally revealed to his estranged husband Callum when he decided to file a police report against Lewis.

Ben was taken off guard when Callum entered the interview room and he finally told him the secret he had been hiding for months.

Later on, Ben admitted to Callum that Lewis wasn't the cause of their split, as they'd "fallen apart" long before he arrived on the scene.
