EastEnders star Molly Rainford explains Anna's big dilemma over Gina

EastEnders spoilers follow.

EastEnders star Molly Rainford has spoken about the latest twist in Anna Knight's ongoing search for her mother.

Fans of the show already know that Gina and Anna's mum 'Rose' is actually Cindy Beale, who is currently living with Peter in France. While Gina and George have given up on tracking down Rose, Anna hasn't given up hope that she'll one day return and decided to take matters into her own hands.

Recent episodes saw Anna go behind her family's back in her search for answers by hiring a private investigator, landing her in hot water with sister Gina after being caught out.

Speaking about the storyline, the actress gave her thoughts on Anna's actions as well Gina's ultimatum to choose between her or their mum.

"I don't know whether I would say fair, but I understand why Gina said that and feels this way," she said.

"Gina, for a long time, has stepped into that maternal role even though she's not that much older than Anna. She's always felt that burden of her mum leaving, more than Anna realises, so Gina's doing this because she wants to protect Anna."

She continued: "I think Anna appreciates that but I don't think she feels it's fair as she wants to know more about her mum. I think that's the thing that overrides it and persuades her to reach out to the investigator."

The actress also revealed patriarch George's reaction to his daughter's search, adding that Anna will be "disappointed" to have let down the two people closest to her.

"Anna feels really gutted as it's never what she intended," she said. "I think it's hard for her to see her dad and Gina's disappointment in her because they are her support system."

With Cindy expected to make a return to Walford later in the year, Rainford teased more conflict ahead for the Knights.

"More curiosity, a lot more head versus heart conflict and hopefully some discoveries," she said.

EastEnders airs on Mondays - Thursdays at 7.30pm on BBC One. The show also streams on BBC iPlayer.
