EastEnders star Navin Chowdhry weighs in on Suki accident mystery

EastEnders spoilers follow.

EastEnders star Navin Chowdhry has weighed in on Suki Panesar's mysterious accident this week.

Scenes on the BBC soap saw Suki found unconscious at the bottom of the stairs at home with Nish staring down at her, which came as she and Eve Unwin planned to flee Walford.

While Nish is the chief suspect around the accident, not everything appeared clear-cut as Suki didn't seem convinced he pushed her when she came to. However, next week's episodes will see Nish taken in for questioning by police and arrested.

Asked whether he thinks his character is capable of pushing Suki, Navin admitted: “I think we’ve seen that Nish is capable of anything. This is a man who went to jail for 20 years and effectively lost the best years of his family life.

"He wasn’t there for his children just because he believed, although he had no evidence and he didn’t catch Suki in bed with another man, but he believed that she was having an affair and he burnt the house down which killed a man and resulted in him being jailed for twenty years. So, he’s capable, I think, of doing anything.”

Nish tries to isolate Suki from her loved ones, and pressed on whether he has something to hide or this is his controlling nature taking over, the star explained that it "is all about control".

"It’s all about him wanting Suki to need him, to want him, to desire him," he said. "He doesn’t want her to get any help from anybody else whether that’s financial or physical, but especially mental support.

"He thinks he is enough for her and she doesn’t need anything from anybody except for her husband. He also wants to make sure that no one fills her with ideas or possibilities. He doesn’t want anyone to say anything that goes against the way he wants to handle this situation.

"It’s a very common trait with relationships that are based on control. You try to isolate any opportunity that the person your controlling has with anyone else. It’s quite horrific behaviour to be on the receiving end of, but this is the way that he chooses to control the narrative in their relationship.”

Navin noted that Nish "cares a huge amount about what people think of him in Walford" in relation to gossip around his potential involvement.

"Just the optics of him as a businessman, him as a hardman and him as a man in control. What people think of him is hugely important, but at the same time he’s not scared to annoy anyone.

"The lack of empathy he had for Billy Mitchell in the lead up to Lola’s death was absolutely horrific, but in his head, as a businessman, he cannot be seen to have a shop bust-up or to show any weakness in any way, so I think optics for him are absolutely paramount."

Speaking about Nish's feelings following his arrest, Navin said: "I think he’s shocked. Regardless of how innocent or guilty he might be, he does things in a particular way where there’s no reason to doubt him and so for the police to get any kind of hint that he might be at fault here or that he might be guilty is horrific for him.

"He’s had a couple of scares earlier when some jobs have gone wrong and the police have been called. He knows if he does any sort of reoffending, that’s it, it’s game over.

"He’s just got his life back and in his head everything is going exactly as he wants. The business is back on track, his wife is under his thumb and the kids will do exactly what he says. He cannot have that go wrong so I think it is a genuine fear that the police have caught wind of what he may or may not have done.”

However, when pressed on whether his character's time is up, the actor suggested that "Nish can wriggle out of anything in his own mind".

"He obviously does have moments of fear, but aside from that he’s used to getting things done his own way. So whether he can actually wriggle out of anything doesn’t occur to him, because in his mind he can just get the job done," Navin added.

EastEnders airs on Mondays - Thursdays at 7.30pm on BBC One. The show also streams on BBC iPlayer.
