Ed Sheeran has made history after his latest single reached number one in the UK charts.

His latest release Eyes Closed went straight in at the top of the chart on Friday (31 March) and won him a place in the history books at the same time as he became the third most successful artist in British chart history.

Sheeran, 32, knocked Miley Cyrus off the number one spot and took to social media to celebrate as he thanked his fans for their support.

He said: "Eyes Closed is my 14th Number 1 in the UK. I’m over the bloody moon, thank you so much. I can’t wait for you to hear Subtract. I’m so glad you’ve connected to this song.

"I never, ever take this for granted this far into my career. Thank you to everyone who’s been connecting to Eyes Closed.”

The lead single from his upcoming fifth studio album Subtract has become his 14th UK number-one single.

The landmark means he is now just a few chart-toppers behind top spot holder Elvis Presley, who racked up an incredible 21 UK number-ones in his career.

The second place spot is held by The Beatles who racked up 17 number-one singles as a band.

Sheeran meanwhile will share his third-place spot with classic crooner Cliff Richard and Irish boyband superstars Westlife.

His latest album offering is scheduled for release on 5 May, with the popular singer currently on the road for his +-=÷× Tour.

Sheeran recently spoke about how he owed his success to the help of his late friend Jamal Edwards who used his SBTV music platform to help launch his career.

Talking to The Jonathan Ross Show he said: “I was this struggling up-and-coming musician wanting anyone to take me seriously and no one was taking me seriously.

“I was fat, scraggly ginger hair, I had a tiny guitar and I used to rap and beatbox and everyone kind of saw me as a joke.

“Jamal put me on his channel, which at the time on YouTube was the coolest channel to be on, and as soon as he put me on, everything started to fall into place.”
