Eddie Murphy on his son dating Martin Lawrence's daughter: 'Our gene pool is gonna make this funny baby'

Murphy said he and his "Boomerang" costar "thought it was cool" when they learned of their kids' relationship.

Eddie Murphy has high hopes for his future grandchild — who may have two grandparents that starred in Boomerang.

In a new interview with CBS Mornings, the Beverly Hills Cop star talked about the romance between his son Eric Murphy and Jasmin Lawrence, the daughter of Martin Lawrence.

"They're both beautiful, they look amazing together — and it's funny, everybody’s like, 'What is that baby gonna be funny?'" Murphy said. "Our gene pool is gonna make this funny baby."

When asked how he and Lawrence reacted to the news of their kids' relationship, Murphy said, "We just was like, 'It's cool.' Yeah, it was cool. We thought it was cool."

He reiterated, "If they ever get married and have a child, I am expecting the child to be funny."

Eric is the eldest of the Coming to America star's 10 kids, while Jasmin is the eldest of the Blue Streak actor's children. PEOPLE reported that the couple first publicized their relationship in 2021, while InTouch Weekly noted that the pair met through Jasmin's uncle, not their famous fathers.

Murphy and Lawrence worked together in both 1992's Boomerang and 1999's Life.

Lawrence briefly commented on his daughter's relationship in an interview with Jimmy Kimmel in 2022. "We kind of just stay out of their business and let them do their own thing and respect their their thing," the Bad Boys star said. After Kimmel asked about a potential wedding, Lawrence responded, "I'm gonna try to get Eddie to pay for it."

Murphy wasn't particularly enthusiastic about the proposal. "No, no, no, no, no," the Trading Places star responded in an interview with ETalk. "That's not how it goes. My daughter just got married, and I had to pay. I really had to pay. And you have to do the same, Martin. Don't try to switch it up, don't try to change no s---, do no Hollywood switch. You're paying for the wedding. If it goes down, Martin is paying. And the wedding better be wonderful."

Elsewhere in the CBS Mornings interview, Murphy discussed his approach to parenting. "I've always been the same type of dad," he said. "I'm just laid back, I'm not a super-hard disciplinarian. I'm like a cool dad. But I don't let them get away with all kinds of stuff. I've always been there for everything — school plays, and all that stuff."
