In A Violent Nature debuted at this year’s Sundance Film Festival and will be released by Altitude in the UK and Ireland on Friday, July 12. The film’s synopsis reads: When a locket is removed from a collapsed fire tower in the woods that entombs the rotting corpse of Johnny, a vengeful spirit spurred on by a horrific 60-year-old crime, his body is resurrected and becomes hellbent on retrieving it. The festival said today the pic will give audiences a sample of EIFF’s brand new Midnight Madness programming strand that will run throughout the festival in August.

“The team is so thrilled to be launching Midnight Madness this year as part of the fabric of our new EIFF,” Ridd said. “Each night of the Festival we’ll be launching top-notch horror films, action films, and comedies from all over the world late into the night, and we can’t wait to announce the lineup. In the meantime, this taster of the experience at the Cameo will be a total trip. In A Violent Nature is one of the most exciting and original new horror films of the year, and a total joy to experience its gory brilliance with an audience. Bring it on.”

EIFF also recently announced that the opening night film of its 2024 festival will be Nora Fingscheidt’s adaptation of Amy Liptrot’s best-selling memoir The Outrun, starring Saoirse Ronan. The festival also announced that its shorts stands will be named The Thelma Schoonmaker Prize for Short Filmmaking Excellence after the veteran editor Thelma Schoonmaker best known for her landmark collaborations with Martin Scorsese.

The 77th EIFF runs from August 15 to August 21.
