Egypt court sentences Islamist to death

CAIRO (Reuters) - An Egyptian court on Thursday upheld a death sentence against an Islamist charged with murder during the violent upheaval following the army's ousting of President Mohamed Mursi of the Muslim Brotherhood in 2013, state television said. In one of the most dramatic scenes of that period captured on video, the man sentenced to death, Mahmoud Hassan Ramadan, threw someone off a rooftop during clashes in Alexandria. Fifty-seven others were sentenced to 15-25 years in the case. (Writing by Michael Georgy; Editing by Alison Williams)

On Sunday evening, the North Caucasus region of Dagestan was rocked by a series of brutal terrorist attacks. Gunmen opened fire in a synagogue in Derbent, graphically slit the throat of Russian Orthodox priest Father Nikolay, and attacked Jewish and Christian houses of worship in Dagestan’s largest city Makhachkala. These brutal crimes claimed the lives of at least 15 people, including police officers.
