Elijah Wood has admitted he was "surprised" by the announcement of more Lord of the Rings movies.

An animated prequel to Tolkien's original trilogy, called The War of the Rohirrim, is currently in the works, while live-action show The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power is in production on its second season.

On top of both of these projects, Warner Bros recently announced multiple movies set in the world of Middle-earth are being planned for the future, unconnected to The Rings of Power.

Wood, who played Frodo Baggins in Sir Peter Jackson's LOTR movies, recently spoke to GQ about his reaction to Warner Bros announcing a new slate of Middle-earth films.

"I'm fascinated and I'm excited. I hope it's good," he said.

The actor then admitted: "I'm surprised—I don't know why I'm surprised because, of course there would be more movies."

Wood didn't address whether or not he'd be interested in returning as Frodo, but his former co-star Andy Serkis has hinted he is more than willing to play Gollum again.

"Look, [producers] Peter Jackson, Fran Walsh, Philippa Boyens are sort of a second family that I have become part of and have gone on to make so many films with," the Batman actor explained on BroBible’s Post-Credit Podcast.

"And – let me tell you – they are the best and most incredible people to work with. I think that there are so many other potential Middle-earth projects which could come about, and if they’re doing them, I would, of course, jump at the chance to have that relationship rekindled… Middle-earth has never left me."

Jackson and his team previously said that they would be monitoring Warner Bros' development on these new Lord of the Rings films, but they aren't officially attached yet.

The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power streams on Prime Video.
