Who Are Emily Blunt's Parents? All About the Actress' Mom and Dad, Joanna and Oliver Blunt
Emily Blunt’s parents have accompanied her to a number of award shows throughout her career
Emily Blunt has had two important people in her corner during the 2024 awards season: her parents Joanna and Oliver Blunt.
The Oppenheimer actress was born on Feb. 23, 1983, in London as the second of four children. Joanna, who was an actress, chose to retire early when Emily started school to focus on raising her children, while Oliver worked as a lawyer.
In 2024, Emily was nominated for multiple awards for her performance as Kitty Oppenheimer in the Oscar-nominated film. During her award show season run, she brought her parents to multiple events, all culminating with Joanna and Oliver joining her at the Academy Awards as her dates, though she didn't end up winning Best Supporting Actress.
"I'm going to bring [husband] John [Krasinksi] and I'm hoping my parents, who are sort of angling for it," Emily told PEOPLE ahead of the big night. "It's my dad's birthday that weekend!"
From their careers to their impression of Emily's husband, here’s everything to know about Emily Blunt’s parents, Joanna and Oliver Blunt.
Joanna was an actress and a teacher
Before Emily was born, Joanna worked as an actress and, eventually, an English teacher. However, she stopped acting once Emily started school so she could raise her four kids, The Devil Wears Prada actress told The Guardian in February 2010.
Though she said she gets her level-headedness from her mother, Emily said she never did get to see her perform.
"I wish I had. I hear she was wonderful,” she told the outlet.
Oliver is a lawyer
Oliver is a practicing lawyer at Furnival Chambers in London with a focus on murder, terrorism, drug and fraud cases, per his bio on Leaders in Law’s website.
When Emily’s career was taking off in 2009, she told The Guardian that her father left a message on her phone telling her that he was surprised to have been addressed in court as “Emily Blunt’s father.”
"He said to me: 'Where have the days gone where you were known as my daughter?' I was like: 'Those days are long gone, Dad,' " she told the outlet.
They have four children
Joanna and Oliver have three children in addition to Emily. The actress has one older sister, Felicity, and a younger brother, Sebastian, and sister, Susannah.
Felicity, a literary agent based in the U.K., married Emily’s The Devil Wears Prada costar Stanley Tucci in 2012. The two met at the premiere of the movie in 2006 while Tucci was married to his now-deceased wife, Kate. After Kate died in 2009, Tucci and Felicity met again at Emily's wedding in 2010 and struck a relationship.

The Blunt family only have positive things to say about Tucci, with Emily telling PEOPLE in 2022 that she “worship[s] the guy.”
"He's an all-around Renaissance man who knows the way to everyone's hearts. And it's through having a damn good time," Emily said. "He's frighteningly bright, quick to laugh, loves to be laughed at, charismatic, warm and energetic."
Sebastian followed in his older sister’s footsteps and became an actor as well, most notably starring in 2014’s Edge of Tomorrow. Meanwhile, Susannah has stayed out of the public eye.
They are proud of Emily’s career
In addition to pride, Emily said her parents also feel a sense of relief at her success.
"I think they're very proud of me but in the way you'd sort of expect, not in the gushing, obsequious way, but just because I'm their child and I think they're relieved their child is doing well in a business that is known for crushing people,” she told The Guardian in 2009.
Though they may not be constantly loading Emily with compliments, Joanna and Oliver have expressed their pride in special moments. The Into the Woods actress shared that when she first showed her father her work in 2018’s Mary Poppins Returns, he cried.
"My father cried, hard," Emily told CBS News in December 2018. "And I've seen my Dad cry one other time in my life, and that was at his father's funeral. He's terribly British and doesn't do that."
She called the moment “completely unique” and “very special.”
Krasinski made a good impression on them when they first met
In a March 2020 interview with The Guardian, Emily recounted the story of how she first introduced her parents to Krasinski. She shared that she brought him to the U.K. for Sunday night dinner, or “Sunday roast,” and was impressed by the way he handled the menu for the night, despite his personal preferences.
“My father likes to present the beef sort of barely cooked,” Emily said, adding that Krasinski didn’t say a word in response and obligingly ate.
“It is my lasting memory of how John coped with that situation, as someone who prefers things a bit more medium,” she said.
The love went both ways between Emily's parents and Krasinski, as the Jack Ryan actor shared on Late Night with Seth Meyers in October 2019 that his father-in-law is the “greatest human ever” with the “greatest accent.”
He said while he was filming the action show in London, he would talk to Oliver who would ask what he got up to that day. After Krasinski told him he was “running on some rooftops,” Oliver had an “impassioned” response.
“He was like ‘Really?! That’s absolutely wonderful! Good for you! Fantastic, fantastic!” Krasinski said. “I was like ‘Thank you so much!’ ”
“Had I known that’s all it took when I proposed to your daughter…,” he joked.
They have accompanied Emily at award shows
Joanna and Oliver enjoyed their moment in the spotlight when they accompanied their daughter to the 2024 EE BAFTA Film Awards in February 2024. Emily wore a metallic Elie Saab Couture gown with cutout details and beading all over. Her parents also dressed to the nines, with Joanna sporting a sequin look and Oliver dressed up in a dapper tux.
In March 2024, the pair accompanied Emily to the Oscars.
