Emma Chamberlain breaks down her iconic looks of 2023

Emma Chamberlain is known for taking big beauty swings and in 2023 she went for some of her most daring hair and makeup looks yet.

"I've been loving to experiment," the 22-year-old Lancôme ambassadress tells PEOPLE of her approach to her look this year. "Especially when I'm doing a red carpet or a fashion show. I'm just really letting my makeup be an accessory to my look."

Although she switched it up from one event to the next, her goal is the same. “I want it to look cool. I want it to look interesting and intriguing," she says.

That said, the podcast host admits that not every makeup moment has been a total success. “You're not always going to like everything on you and that's totally fine. But, trying is what's exciting. You're not going to have a hit every time.”

And it's that willingness to take risks that Chamberlain says would impress her teen self. "She'd be like, 'oh, whoa, girl, you really don't give a f- - -, do you? That's cool,'" she says.

We asked the social media superstar to review five of her most talked-about beauty looks from 2023. Here's what she had to say about each:

Chamberlain headed into 2023 with an "unintentional" 360-degree hair change at the famed party on March 12.

"Bleaching my hair [blonde] made my hair fall out. I had to go back to brown and I had to give myself a little shag," explains Chamberlain, who worked with Graham Nation on this half-up style with baby bangs.

Chamberlain admits she wasn't 100 percent on board with the dramatic transformation (later adding that she's doubtful she'd revisit bangs again). "But, it was one of those things where it's like, 'You know what? I'm on a healing journey,' and I was like, 'I'm just going to make the most of it.'"

What she did love: this glittery green eyeshadow (by Lilly Keys Westbrook) moment, which she describes as a "swampy green vibe."

On May 1, she attended her third consecutive Met Gala in two custom Miu Miu skirt suits styled by Jared Ellner.

She arrived in a baby blue set with a bedazzled top, then went for an abs-baring black version for her red carpet corespondent duties.

How did she ace a quick-change at fashion's biggest night? "It was actually not bad. Went into a back room that nobody's ever seen before and nobody should ever see again," she spills. (She also told PEOPLE StyleWatch in June that she had a bit of a wardrobe malfunction with the switch-up.)

Pin-straight hair extensions tied the different vibes together, as did her smokey blue eye makeup, which Chamberlain says was "so special and kind of reminds me of what I used to do for my cheer competitions when I was 15 years old."

When Lancôme took over the Parisian landmark on Sept. 26, Chamberlain went for a "classic French" red lip to celebrate.

Even when halfway across the world, the California native adhered to her number one beauty rule: never leave the house "without a lip on" because, she says, "that's always a mistake." (She also jokes that she's "guilty as charged" when it comes to lining her lips.)

Chamberlain was joined by Lancôme's dazzling group of ambassadresses, including Amanda Seyfried and Penélope Cruz. "I love them so much. They're the nicest women in the world," she compliments.

Chamberlain continued her hot style streak at the BoF 500 Gala on Sept. 30 with her most daring look yet: platinum blonde eyebrows.

"It was so scary. I really did not know if it was going to look good because it's a risky choice," she says. "But, I ended up loving it and I was so stoked that I did it. Now I will be bleaching my brows once a month probably for the rest of my life."

Chamberlain took her CFDA Awards style to the next level on on Nov. 6 in a structured Thom Browne gown, a bow-adorned ponytail and cyberpunk red eyeshadow.

Her hot tip for acing a red carpet appearance? "Hydrating the skin for as long as you can beforehand and getting rest." She credits her dewy complexion to Lancôme's Génifique night cream and serum, which she applies "everywhere."
