Emmerdale airs exit episode for Dan Spencer

Emmerdale spoilers follow.

Liam Fox has bowed out of Emmerdale, with his character Dan Spencer's exit scenes airing on Thursday (August 17).

The hour-long episode was filled with bittersweet goodbyes for Dan, as well as an unannounced cameo appearance from Laura Norton as Kerry Wyatt.

Dan had been trying to spend his final days of freedom making peace with daughter Amelia, after he'd pleaded guilty to assaulting her stalker Lloyd. Unfortunately for Dan, Lloyd subsequently died, thus sealing his fate.

The latest episode saw Dan bidding farewell to his friends and neighbours, including a video call where Kerry offered him words of encouragement.

"I know you'd do anything to get out of work, but do you not think you went a bit far this time?" she joked.

Dan confessed that he was fearful of what's ahead, admitting that it still doesn't seem real that he is facing time behind bars.

"It's not right, Dan, and everybody knows it. The whole village is rooting for you," Kerry assured him.

Once he arrived at the court, nervous Dan was assured by his attorney that he would get a light sentence. Dan then made a heartfelt statement to the court in hopes of mitigating punishment.

"I'm not a violent person," he insisted. "I punched [Lloyd] once but I didn't think about what was going to happen. I didn't do it because I wanted to injure anyone. I did it because I couldn't stand the thought of him carrying on, harassing my little girl."

While Dan expressed regret over his actions, he reeled when the judge returned a harsh sentence of eight years behind bars.

The news filtered through the village like a shockwave, while back at the courthouse, Dan was led away in handcuffs as a tearful Amelia chased after him.

Amelia cried out for her father, but he kept walking rather than turn around and face her.

There were recently reports that Liam was set to leave the Dales, as he'd signed up to star in panto later in the year — something ITV soap actors are not traditionally allowed to do.

Emmerdale airs on weeknights at 7.30pm on ITV1, and streams on ITVX.
