Emmerdale to explore Caleb and Ruby backstory in new plot

Emmerdale spoilers follow.

Emmerdale has revealed plans for Caleb and Ruby's next big storyline.

Viewers will learn more about the fiery couple later this year as a "blast from the past" throws a spanner in the works for their relationship.

Caleb was introduced to Emmerdale in December 2022 as the long-lost brother of Cain and Chas Dingle.

Ruby followed her estranged husband to the Dales in January this year and the pair ultimately reunited, despite plenty of rows and tension along the way.

Speaking to Digital Spy and other media at an Emmerdale press conference this week, the ITV soap's new producer Sophie Roper teased a future storyline.

Roper explained: "Caleb and Ruby have landed in the village and had a real impact, but we don't know a huge amount about them. There's lots in terms of their history, particularly Ruby's, that is yet unknown.

"We're going to see a bit of a blast from their past come back and really give us some more about this complicated relationship between husband and wife – and also the complicated family dynamics we have there.

"There's lots to stay tuned for, in terms of Caleb and Ruby and their wider story."

Details of the couple's future comes following the recent news that their son Nicky will soon be leaving the Dales.

Last month, it was revealed that Lewis Cope and Brahmdeo Shannon Ramana – who play Nicky and his boyfriend Suni Sharma – have both already filmed their final scenes.

Recent episodes have already paved the way for the pair's departures, with Nicky keen for a fresh start after falling out with his parents.

Nicky has been on bad terms with Caleb for a while, and he also drifted apart from Ruby when he found out that she'd deliberately knocked over Ethan Anderson in a hit and run.

Emmerdale airs on weeknights at 7.30pm on ITV1, and streams on ITVX.
