Emmerdale spoilers follow.

This story discusses topics including rape and sexual assault.

Emmerdale's Sam Dingle considers taking matters into his own hands next week as he fears that Craig Reed will escape punishment for his crime.

Sam is about to learn the truth about his wife Lydia's recent ordeal, which leaves him feeling helpless and angry.

As we've already revealed, Lydia confides in her family in emotional scenes which air in tonight's hour-long episode (October 10).

Sam, Mandy and Belle Dingle are all shocked and upset as Lydia explains that Craig raped her.

In the aftermath next week, Sam is disappointed when Lydia turns down his offer to spend the day together.

As Lydia spends time cleaning the house instead, a police officer arrives to update her on Craig following her decision to report him.

The police officer confirms that Craig has been released pending further investigation. Lydia is disappointed to hear the news, while Sam is visibly seething.

Sam invites Rhona Goskirk to visit the Dingles' cottage, hoping that it could help Lydia to speak to someone who has been through a similar ordeal.

A supportive Rhona sits with Lydia, who tentatively confides in her. Sam listens into the conversation and his anger grows over the likelihood that Craig may never receive a punishment.

Later in the week, Cain spots that Sam is struggling and steps in to find out how he's coping.

With Cain's advice on his mind, Sam is left wondering whether he can bring Craig to justice himself. Will Sam break the law to deal with Craig?

Speaking recently about the long-term future of the story, Emmerdale producer Laura Shaw told Digital Spy and other media: "From very early on in the research with Rape Crisis, it was obvious that the impact on partners, family, friends and the whole local community is just huge.

"Sam is going to really struggle to come to terms with it and his feelings of helplessness and inadequacy. He just wants to help Lydia, but he doesn't know what to do or how to help.

"What we'll see is how people really don't quite know how to react or what to say. They just want Lydia to be better, but how do you actually begin to help somebody who has been through an ordeal like that? We really see just how difficult it is, not just for Lydia, but for absolutely everyone around her as well."
