Emmerdale resolves David exit mystery after two weeks

Emmerdale has cleared up a mystery surrounding David Metcalfe's exit.

David, played by Matthew Wolfenden, left the ITV soap in emotional scenes after discovering his son Jacob had begun a relationship with his ex, Victoria Sugden.

Despite the controversial couple apologising to David, everything became too much for the fan-favourite character as he left the Dales for London to join Priya Sharma and her daughter Amba.

At the time, fans were quick to point out an important character missing from David's exit scenes: his young son Theo.

However, Tuesday's episode cleared up the mystery surrounding the "missing" child, as Brenda Walker told David's dad Eric Pollard: "We're going to have a lovely family Christmas. I know David and Theo won't be there, but Leyla popped in and invited you and me to join her and Jacob for Christmas Day, so if that doesn't turn your frown upside down, I don't know what will."

Speaking about his soap exit, Matthew said it felt like "the right time" to move on with his career.

"It feels like the right time," he explained. "The door’s left open, they’re not killing me off, I’ve been promised… So who knows, I might be back, we will see."

David's discovery of Jacob's relationship wasn't the only blow he was dealt before his departure, as his father revealed his Parkinson's diagnosis.

Eric was initially determined to face the disease alone, rejecting the idea of visiting a support group and pushing his loved ones away as he struggled to accept the reality of the disease.

Continuing to struggle, he reached out to pal Rodney Blackstock but was left devastated when his friend seemed indifferent about his life-altering news.

Emmerdale airs on weeknights at 7.30pm on ITV1, and streams on ITVX.
