Emmerdale to revisit Paddy and Chas tragedy in new scenes

The following article contains discussion of themes including child loss.

Emmerdale spoilers follow.

Emmerdale's Paddy and Chas Dingle reflect on their past tragedy tonight (May 4) as the village is rocked by worrying news about baby Reuben.

The former couple privately reflect on the loss of their daughter Grace as word spreads around the village that Reuben may be seriously ill.

In Thursday's hour-long episode, new mum Chloe Harris worries when she notices that Reuben has a temperature.

Chloe calls Liam Cavanagh for help and realises that she was right to raise the alarm, as the local doctor is also concerned about Reuben's symptoms.

Under Liam's instructions, Reuben is rushed to hospital and the doctors later announce that it's likely he has bacterial meningitis.

Chloe stays by Reuben's side at the hospital, while the newborn's father Mackenzie Boyd finds himself in turmoil as he doesn't know how to pay a visit without blowing his cover. Will he fight the urge to go to his son?

Meanwhile, back at the pub, Chas and Paddy share a moment as the news about Reuben leads to them reflecting on Grace.

Chas and Paddy welcomed Grace into the world in October 2018 following the news that she had bilateral renal agenesis – a rare condition where both kidneys do not develop.

In emotional scenes, they shared a few precious moments with their daughter before she passed away.

Jessie Elland, who plays Chloe, recently spoke about how her character will cope with Reuben's illness in the coming days.

She told Digital Spy and other media: "Overwhelming is probably the best word, she is completely overwhelmed. She almost numbs herself to everything else and has this laser focus on Reuben.

"One of the reasons that she wanted to go ahead with the pregnancy and have Reuben was because this is her chance to have her own family and someone that's always going to be there for her.

"She's been through a lot, she's been through the wringer in terms of family and friends so when he's born, he's her whole world, so to lose that would be horrendous for her. She's beyond terrified."

Emmerdale airs on weeknights at 7.30pm on ITV1, and streams on ITVX.
