Emmerdale star Dominic Brunt talks emotional new Paddy scenes

Emmerdale star Dominic Brunt has spoken about upcoming emotional scenes for Paddy Dingle.

In scenes set to air next week, Paddy will take part in a face your fears day alongside Mary and Marlon, which sees the character pay a visit to the grave of his late daughter Grace, who died in infancy.

Recent months have seen Paddy struggle with his mental health, with the character being at the centre of a male suicide storyline. Since opening up about experiencing suicidal thoughts, Paddy has been able to seek support both in out of the village.

Speaking about Paddy's current mental state, Brunt reflected on his character's journey over the past few months.

"I think he realises how important it is to articulate your feelings. He was quite emotionally immature in that way, " Brunt said of Paddy's ongoing mental health journey.

"That's the thing with lots of men, we take after our fathers, who take after their fathers, who take after their fathers. I think that's changing slowly but surely. He certainly doesn't feel silly about making himself sound vulnerable anymore."

Weighing in on Rhona's plan to make Paddy, Marlon and Mary tackle their problems head on, Brunt added that it was important for Paddy to open up about his feelings surrounding Grace.

"It's how he feels about the fact that his daughter died of natural causes, and he considered ending his life voluntarily, he can't believe he'd do that when his daughter never had that chance or that choice," he explained. "So he has to mention that to someone.

"Once people say they'll support him, he's alright and he gets there. He explains his reasons and he feels miles better for doing that."

Emmerdale airs on weeknights at 7.30pm on ITV1, and streams on ITVX.
