Emmerdale star Flo Wilson responds to shock death storyline

Emmerdale spoilers follow.

Emmerdale star Flo Wilson, who stars as vicar Charles Anderson's mother Claudette on the soap, has responded to the shocking death of her on-screen husband.

In an episode that aired on August 29, Charles' father Victor died suddenly after appearing to steal a family heirloom from Manpreet. After Claudette found the necklace in her husband's pocket, Victor did a runner only to be found dead by his son Charles in the church.

Speaking to Inside Soap about the death of Claudette's beloved husband, Wilson said his passing was scripted before she joined the show.

"We've always known that Victor was going to die, but then we [the Andersons] all started working together, and relationships were built," said Wilson.

"It was genuinely upsetting knowing where the story was going: Eddie [Osei, who played Victor] has a smile that could melt ice caps," she added.

Fans of the soap will know that it was actually Charles who planted the necklace in his dad's pocket, framing him for the theft.

In coming weeks, Charles will grapple with his guilt but that's nothing compared to what his mother will feel if she finds out about his betrayal.

Hinting at what's to come for the family, Wilson teased some big emotions from the remaining Andersons, saying: "It's a bit of a roller coaster, with reactions to come from everybody. We saw Charles constantly pushing Victor away, so dealing with his death is a conflict of emotions."

As the drama unfolds, Claudette looks set to take on a more traditional soap role as the family matriarch, a responsibility she calls "an honour".

"It's an honour because I want to show the whole spectrum of a black matriarch," she explained. "The way she speaks is so much like a lot of the elders I knew growing up - strong moral compass, though doesn't necessarily take her own advice. But her heart's in the right place."

Emmerdale airs on weeknights at 7.30pm on ITV1, and streams on ITVX.
