Emmerdale star Lisa Riley responds to Lydia Dingle storyline announcement

Emmerdale's Lisa Riley has responded to the announcement of a major new storyline for Lydia Dingle.

In the storyline, which the soap has collaborated with Rape Crisis on, Lydia will be sexually assaulted by her childhood friend Craig, and she will struggle with whether to report him to the police and starts to withdraw from her friends and family.

On her Instagram, Riley responded to the announcement, writing: "So so so proud of my dear friend [Karen Blick], this is very sensitive storyline coming up in @emmerdale. You will all get to see acting at its absolute best.

"To watch from afar, the research, the dedication, the love for her job, it’s why we love what we do.

The Lydia actress said in a press release that the storyline is "one of the most important and sensitive stories I have been part of", and she was shocked upon learning the statistics.

Since being given the storyline, she has met with women impacted by the crime and hopes to do them justice and raise further awareness.

Emmerdale airs on weeknights at 7.30pm on ITV1, and streams on ITVX.
