Emmerdale star Martelle Edinborough returns to filming after brain surgery

Emmerdale star Martelle Edinborough has returned to the set of the ITV soap, after recently taking time off in order to have surgery on a brain aneurysm.

Martelle, who plays Suzy Merton, revealed to fans last month that she had undergone surgery to treat the aneurysm.

She confirmed that her doctors were able to "successfully treat the aneurysm, placing a flow diverter in the artery to cut off the blood supply to it, soon enabling it [to] disappear for good".

Martelle, of course, had to take some time off from filming for the procedure and her subsequent recovery – but she has now confirmed that Suzy is officially back on Emmerdale.

Before Martelle stopped filming to prepare for her surgery, viewers saw Suzy end up in hospital after she was brutally attacked by drug dealer Callum Matthews, which left her friend Leyla feeling guilty.

Speaking about the storyline, Roxy Shahidi, who plays Leyla, said: "Leyla experiences guilt and fear when Suzy is attacked. She blames herself because Suzy has stepped in to save the mess that Leyla had created.

"[She] sees the reality and the lengths that Callum will go to – [he] is willing to endanger their lives and potentially end them, so her fear goes through the roof."

Emmerdale airs on weeknights at 7.30pm on ITV1, and streams on ITVX.
