Emmerdale star Matthew Wolfenden exits soap after 17 years

Emmerdale spoilers follow.

Emmerdale star Matthew Wolfenden is reportedly set to quit the ITV soap after 17 years in the role of David Metcalfe.

As reported by The Sun, the actor is set to call time on his stint in the show, with Wolfenden apparently looking for a change amid a lack of gritty plotlines for his character in recent months.

ITV declined to comment when contacted by Digital Spy about the star's potential departure from the soap.

Wolfenden wouldn’t be the first major exit from Emmerdale this year, with Fiona Wade, Darcy Grey, Marshall Hamston, Karene Peter and Bhasker Patel all departing in recent months.

Liam Fox, who plays Dan Spencer, also exited last week, whilst there are rumours surrounding Samantha Giles’ future as Bernice Blackstock.

Whilst there are some changes in the cast, mainstay Dominic Brunt recently talked about the upcoming developments for Paddy Dingle, with the character persevering through a troubled time with his mental health.

“I think he realises how important it is to articulate your feelings. He was quite emotionally immature in that way,” he said. “That's the thing with lots of men, we take after our fathers, who take after their fathers, who take after their fathers.

“I think that's changing slowly but surely. He certainly doesn't feel silly about making himself sound vulnerable anymore.

"Once people say they'll support him, he's alright and he gets there. He explains his reasons and he feels miles better for doing that,” the actor added.

Emmerdale airs on weeknights at 7.30pm on ITV1, and streams on ITVX.
