Emmerdale star Roxy Shahidi explains Leyla's role in Christmas proposal plot

Emmerdale spoilers follow.

Emmerdale star Roxy Shahidi has spoken about her character Leyla Cavanagh's involvement in the show's Christmas proposal storyline.

Show bosses have previously confirmed that Belle Dingle will pop the question to her boyfriend Tom King in next week's festive episodes.

Belle teams up with wedding planner Leyla after deciding to propose at a local ice rink.

With a little help from Leyla's celebrity contacts, Belle gives Tom a treat by arranging for ice dancing legends Jayne Torvill and Christopher Dean to perform during the romantic moment.

Speaking to Digital Spy and other press about the episode, Roxy laughed: "It's all thanks to Leyla that this is happening! Before this, Belle has tried and failed to propose and it's all gone disastrously wrong.

"But obviously Leyla has a lot of experience, given her line of work – she is a wedding planner. So they're talking in the cafe and Leyla has this genius idea, which is the ice rink and Torvill and Dean.

"Apparently Torvill and Dean owe Leyla a favour. Something went down in Mykonos, but we don't find out what that is. They owe her a favour so that's why they're there."

Roxy also has a real-life link to Torvill and Dean, as she'll be competing on the new series of Dancing on Ice in the New Year.

Roxy is one of 12 confirmed celebrities for the contest, while Torvill and Dean will be reprising their roles as judges.

She continued: "Before we filmed together for Emmerdale, I had the pleasure of meeting Torvill and Dean a couple of weeks previously. You do a two day masterclass in London before you start your training with your coach.

"I met them there. They're so lovely. Christopher Dean span me round. It was really surreal meeting them for the first time.

"Working together on Emmerdale is a very weird merging of worlds but it was actually a really fun day. It's like a school trip when we film anything on location, especially if it's not freezing. At least we were indoors and it wasn't raining on us so it was quite nice."

Emmerdale airs on weeknights at 7.30pm on ITV1, and streams on ITVX.
