Emmerdale's Cathy Hope to flee in emotional new storyline

Emmerdale spoilers follow.

Emmerdale's Cathy Hope is set to flee the village in an emotional new storyline.

Cathy has recently been struggling with heavy periods and mood swings, as well as other disorienting symptoms, which have led to the teen endangering herself with reckless behaviour.

Manpreet and Wendy suspect Cathy has a mood disorder known as Premenstrual Dysphoric Disorder, but Cathy reaches her breaking point in upcoming scenes when she's unable to get an official diagnosis.

In the new scenes, Bob is taken aback when Cathy's headteacher advises his daughter to postpone her studies for a year, as she won't be allowed an access arrangement without a formal diagnosis.

However, Cathy is determined not to be held back a year and convinces Miss Cathcart to let her sit the tests.

Later on, Cathy attempts to drown her sorrows with Marshall, but the next day she's left feeling embarrassed of herself and flies off the handle.

In a flash of emotional rage, Cathy accidentally hits Bob and scratches him with her keys, drawing blood.

Bob offers his daughter a hug after things cool off later in the day, but when he walks away, a lost Cathy pulls a backpack from behind the sofa. Cathy then heads out the door and tears up as she looks up at the B&B, before turning around and walking away into the night.

Earlier this year, it was revealed that Emmerdale would be focusing more on its younger characters, including Cathy, Gabby and Amelia.

Gabby recently got engaged to newcomer Nicky, while Amelia is currently dealing with a cancer scare after finding a lump on her breast.

Daisy Campbell, who plays Amelia, said of the storyline: "I don't think she's coping well because she's terrified and anxious.

"Even if you are young, as Amelia is, you should always go to see your doctor if you notice a lump. I think the soaps are great for getting important messages across."

Emmerdale airs on weeknights at 7.30pm on ITV1, and streams on ITVX.
