Emmerdale's Chas Dingle receives her diagnosis in emotional scenes

Emmerdale spoilers follow.

Emmerdale is set to air emotional scenes next week as Chas Dingle receives her cancer diagnosis.

The ITV soap recently announced a breast cancer storyline for Chas, which will prove especially devastating given her mother's tragic cancer story.

The plotline begins as Chas is having a fling with village doctor Liam Cavanagh, though he notices a lump in her breast and urges her to make an immediate appointment with her GP.

In follow-on scenes set to air next Monday (January 22), Chas gets a call that confirms her hospital appointment that afternoon, and asks Liam to accompany her – leaving him thrilled.

During the appointment, Chas receives the difficult news that she has triple negative cancer.

She later vents to Liam about her diagnosis back home, and it becomes clear to him that she is struggling despite trying to put on a brave face. Chas tells Liam to leave her to herself, and once he is gone she breaks down and cries.

The following day, Paddy notices something is wrong with Chas as he drops off Eve, but she covers for herself. Lydia also picks up that something is wrong, leading Chas to reveal her cancer diagnosis.

Liam overhears from the Woolpack corridor, and while he's happy to hear her opening up, he is also sad that he is no longer Chas's only confidant.

The day afterwards, Chas begins to research more information on her cancer diagnosis on her phone.

Speaking recently about the storyline Emmerdale producer Kate Brooks said: "When this story was first pitched, we were acutely aware how important it was to explore this.

"With Chas's family history of breast cancer and Chas being such a strong character, and in many ways the bedrock of the Dingles, we wanted to show the impact on not just her, but her immediate family.

"With Lucy Pargeter's innate ability to showcase Chas's vulnerabilities beneath her hardened exterior, we knew she was absolutely the right character to play this with."

Emmerdale airs on weeknights at 7.30pm on ITV1, and streams on ITVX.
