Emmerdale's Lucy Pargeter on Chas Dingle's response to lump discovery

Emmerdale spoilers follow.

Emmerdale's Lucy Pargeter has revealed how her character Chas Dingle responds to the discovery of a lump on her breast.

In upcoming scenes, Chas will spend some more time with Liam Cavanagh, and now both single and looking for love, they end up sharing a kiss.

Next week, their very new relationship continues, but amidst the fun fling, Liam breaks the news to Chas that he has felt a lump on her breast.

As Chas's mother Faith passed away from incurable breast cancer back in 2022, this is particularly difficult for her to hear out of the blue.

Pargeter has explained how her character reacts to this sudden health scare, saying: "Chas is completely thrown by this, sideswiped as it was just not something she was expecting him to say. She is likely in denial. She doesn't want to face this."

Chas initially refuses to listen to Liam, deflecting from talking about it with him, but he persists with getting her to take action.

Pargeter continued: "She's naturally very worried. Liam reassures her that it could be nothing but that she must book in properly for a proper check up with the surgery. So she does. Thankfully this advice from Liam does lead to her getting an appointment straight away."

These scenes will mark the beginning of a devastating breast cancer storyline for Chas, with Emmerdale working alongside charity Breast Cancer Now to tell the story.

On the announcement of the storyline, producer Kate Brooks said: "When this story was first pitched, we were acutely aware of how important it was to explore this. With Chas's family history of breast cancer and Chas being such a strong character, and in many ways the bedrock of the Dingles, we wanted to show the impact on not just her, but her immediate family.

"With Lucy Pargeter's innate ability to showcase Chas's vulnerabilities beneath her hardened exterior, we knew she was absolutely the right character to play this with."

Emmerdale airs weeknights at 7.30 on ITV1 and on ITVX.

Emmerdale has worked with Breast Cancer Now on Chas's storyline. In addition to its website, Breast Cancer Now's helpline (0808 800 6000) is open 9am-4pm Monday to Friday and 9am-1pm on Saturday.

More information or support about living with breast cancer or treatment is available from organisations including Macmillan Cancer Support, Coppafeel!, Cancer Research UK and Stand Up to Cancer.
