Emotional D-Day 80th anniversary commemorations brought to close with beacon lighting

Two emotional days of D-Day 80th anniversary commemorations were brought to a close on Thursday, 6 June, as a beacon was lit in Portsmouth.

More than 800 D-Day beacons were lit across the UK and overseas to remember those who served during the 1944 beach invasion.

World leaders and veterans gathered in France to mark the anniversary.

King Charles III and the Prince of Wales both made speeches, with the monarch appearing emotional at events in Portsmouth on Wednesday and in Ver-sur-Mer the following day as they heard tributes to, and words from, servicemen.
