England vs Nigeria LIVE!

England survived a major scare to beat Nigeria 4-2 on penalties and sneak through to a World Cup quarter-final against Colombia or Jamaica following a goalless draw. Bethany England, Rachel Daly, Alex Greenwood and Chloe Kelly all scored in Brisbane as England survived the sending off of Lauren James in normal time to progress.

Georgia Stanway and Desire Oparanozie sent their opening sides penalties wide of the post before Michelle Alozie also missed the target for Nigeria to leave England in control. James was sent off for a reckless stamp with four minutes of the 90 remaining, planting her studs on the back of Alozie. She was initially shown a yellow card but it was changed to a straight red after referee Melissa Borjas checked her pitch-side monitor on the recommendation of the VAR.

Her dismissal left England facing spot-kicks to avoid another massive shock at the tournament, which had already seen former winners USA and Germany eliminated early, along with Brazil. James will miss the quarter-final against on Saturday.

England 4 - 2 Nigeria

Thanks for following!

England are alive at this World Cup, but the Lionesses were scared like never before.

Sarina Wiegman warned in the build-up to this last-16 clash that Nigeria were no pushovers, though no one expected a battle like this. England are through to the quarter-finals, but only after 120 minutes of goalless football and a penalty shootout.

Before that, it was a night of frustration for England, summed up by Lauren James being sent off for a stamp on Nigeria defender Michelle Alozie three minutes before the end of normal time. A young England star, wearing the No7 shirt, sent off at World Cup for a moment of madness. Sound familiar?

A week ago, James and England could do no wrong at this World Cup as they thrashed China to reach the last 16. Nigeria, however, found a way to tame the Lionesses. This has been the tournament of the underdog and the African side showed why.

“Whole lot of fight"

13:06 , Matt Verri

Wiegman on James red card

12:42 , Matt Verri

“It was a moment of a split second. It was later in the game so players get tired.

“She’s inexperienced on this stage and had done well but she lost her emotions. She doesn’t want to hurt anyone. She’s the sweetest person I know.

“Things happen like that and you can’t change it anymore. It’s a huge lesson to learn but it’s not something she really did on purpose. I’ve spoken to her. I just said, ‘That happens sometimes with human beings’.

“You’re in such an intense game, such an emotional game and in a split second she lost her emotions. Of course, she apologised and feels really, really bad. She doesn’t want to hurt anyone.”

For all of you wondering...

Harsh lesson for James

12:05 , Matt Verri

If Lauren James is to fulfil her potential as the next superstar of women’s football, she will have to get used to close attention from opponents after allowing her frustration to get the better of her in Brisbane.

James could have no complaints about being shown a straight red card for a cynical stamp on the back of Michelle Alozie after losing possession to the Nigeria forward.

She was initially booked but it was rightly upgraded to a red after referee Melissa Borjas reviewed the footage on the pitch-side monitor on advice from the VAR.

Her dismissal had echoes of David Beckham’s red card against Argentina in the 1998 World Cup.

Reaction from Chloe Kelly

11:52 , Matt Verri

“It’s amazing, anything that’s thrown at us we show what we’re capable of.

“We dig deep as a group and we believe in our ability. We believe in what we’re told to do. We’ve been practicing a lot and it’s working.

“[Before the penalty] For me I’m thinking going to score, once I win that mental battle I’m good. This team is special. We did it in the Euros, we did it in the Finalissima, we keep pushing forward and there’s more to come from this team.”

England must cope without James

11:42 , Matt Verri

Lauren James will definitely miss the quarter-finals after her straight red card.

It could well be worse for the England star, with a longer suspension definitely possible. Remains to be seen if she does get the chance to play against at the tournament.

So impressive in the group-stage, but a moment of madness here cost her and very nearly cost England.

And breathe!

It’s harsh on Nigeria, who were superb in this match. Particularly in the 90 minutes, if anything they were more dangerous when it was 11 vs 11.

England down to ten after that Lauren James red card, but they have found a way to reach the quarter-finals. Huge effort.

ENGLAND HAVE DONE IT!

Kelly once again the player for the big occasion, slots the penalty home and the Lionesses are through to the quarter-finals!

WIDE! She’s not hit the target.

11:11 , Matt Verri

Millie Bright wins the toss - England will take the first penalty in the shootout.

Here. We. Go.

11:10 , Matt Verri

Mary Earps has stepped away from her team-mates, wants some time by herself before the shootout.

She’s been so impressive all tournament so far - chance for her to take England into the last-eight.

Then again, Chiamaka Nnadozie has been superb too.

FT: England 0-0 Nigeria

11:06 , Matt Verri

Penalties it is!

England played all of extra-time with ten players, but they held their own and they have taken it to a shootout.

Place in the quarter-finals of the World Cup is the prize.

11:04 , Matt Verri

120 mins: Three minutes added on!

Ball bouncing around in the England box, so nervy... they win a free-kick. No rush to take this.

11:02 , Matt Verri

119 mins: Lionesses free-kick on the halfway line, up goes bright.

Lumped into the box, England wins the flick on and Bright is so close to turning it home at the far post! Replays show she would have been offside anyway, but don’t let that spoil the excitement.

Walsh is off for England, she’s not moving particularly well. Zelem on in her place.

11:00 , Matt Verri

117 mins: Bronze tries to win a throw-in, but plays it straight out of play. Nigeria throw-in, deep in England territory.

Oshoala very nearly makes something out of nothing, pouncing on the loose ball and swiveling to get the shot away. Straight at Earps.

10:57 , Matt Verri

114 mins: Nigeria looking tired themselves now - they haven’t really been able to make the most of having an extra player. England not hugely troubled at the back.

Apologies in advance for an jinxing effects...

10:55 , Matt Verri

111 mins: Walsh still out there on her return to the side, been a real test of her fitness. She charges up the pitch to press, England’s furthest player forward.

Just under ten minutes to go before we head to a penalty shootout, unless someone steps up and delivers before then.

10:52 , Matt Verri

108 mins: Oshoala deciding she will only deal in bicycle kicks today.

Cross comes in from the right, Oshoala forced to halt her run and once again she goes for the acrobatic effort. Bronze does enough to put her off, Nigeria star can’t make contact.

10:51 , Matt Verri

107 mins: No surprise that the Lionesses are going long now whenever they can, Earps not in the mood for passing it around at the back.

Already England is having an impact up front, far more suited to playing that role of trying to hold the ball up.

Up and running again!

10:48 , Matt Verri

England is indeed coming on for... England.

It’s Hemp who has made way, so Kelly will move out wide to a more natural position.

HT: England 0-0 Nigeria

10:46 , Matt Verri

Goalless after 105 minutes. Just 15 to go.

Penalties looming in Brisbane!

10:45 , Matt Verri

105 mins: Kelly cannot make the ball stick up front - not really her game to be fair. Wonder if we’ll see Wiegman turn to England at some point soon, with Kelly moving out wide.

Just the one minute added on.

10:43 , Matt Verri

102 mins: Ball into the England, Oshoala throws herself at it as she winds up for the overhead kick attempt... clatters into Stanway. Free-kick England.

Oshoala is in out wide seconds late though, too quick for Greenwood. Tries to stand up a cross to the back post, flicks off the top of the bar.

Whistle goes, ball went out of play before it hit the woodwork.

10:40 , Matt Verri

100 mins: Kelly down, wanting a free-kick. Nothing given, England have everyone back pretty much on the edge of their own area.

Still only one change from Wiegman, Kelly on for Russo. Plenty of options still available to her.

10:38 , Matt Verri

97 mins: Carter is going to fling this long into the box. Decent distance on it, but falls for Nigeria and they can hammer it up the pitch.

Here come the Super Falcons, space has opened up for them. Pass is slid through to Alozie, big chance for her but she slices the shot wide. Really poor effort.

10:35 , Matt Verri

95 mins: England cannot get out, feels like there chance of going through is a penalty shootout.

Bit better as Daly, all by herself, holds off the green shirts and wins a throw-in for her side deep in the Nigeria half.

10:33 , Matt Verri

92 mins: Kelly playing as the sole striker for England, with Hemp and Daly as the two wingers. Stanway and Walsh in the centre of midfield, Greenwood has shifted out to left-back.

Nigeria want a penalty as the ball is launched into the England box - referee not interested. Alozie got a shove in the back from Bronze, that could easily have been given.

Back underway!

10:31 , Matt Verri

Extra-time is up and running - no changes from England ahead of these 30 minutes.

That crucial moment...

10:27 , Matt Verri

FT: England 0-0 Nigeria

10:25 , Matt Verri

Extra-time it is!

The Lionesses are down to ten after that James red card, huge moment in this match.

Sarina Wiegman’s side are going to have to do it the hard way if they are to reach the World Cup quarter-finals.

10:22 , Matt Verri

90+3 mins: Lionesses doing a good job of keeping possession, Nigeria showing no real desire to press hard and win it back.

Guess a full 30 minutes with an extra player is certainly not a bad outcome for them...

10:20 , Matt Verri

90+1 mins: Six minutes added on.

England in no rush when the ball does go out of play, they’d be very happy just to secure another 30 minutes now.

10:18 , Matt Verri

89 mins: Weigman urging calm from her side. They will be rattled now, just need to get to extra-time.

Kelly is on for Russo, as England adjust to going down to ten.

RED CARD!

10:16 , Matt Verri

WOW.

Lauren James has been shown a straight red card. She can’t really have any complaints either.

Stands on Alozie’s back as she stood up and England are down to ten.

10:15 , Matt Verri

85 mins: Yellow card for James... will it just be a yellow?

It’s not clever at all from the England star, she stepped on Alozie on the ground and it didn’t look particularly accidental.

Was it a deliberate stamp? Referee over to look at the monitor...

10:11 , Matt Verri

82 mins: Floated in, a mass of bodies on the six-yard line and it bobbles behind for... a goal-kick.

Earps waves her defenders up the pitch, she wants to get England up the pitch as she launches it long.

10:10 , Matt Verri

81 mins: Nervy moments at the back for England, ball bouncing around in the box. Hemp then gives away a cheap free-kick, Nigeria will keep the pressure on.

Kanu is off for the Super Falcons, she’s been brilliant. Ordega on to replace her.

10:09 , Matt Verri

79 mins: Impossible to predict what we’re going to get in the final ten minutes or so. England starting to look a bit more dangerous, but Nigeria are carrying a real threat when they get forward.

You’d say an extra 30 minutes is the favourite right now...

10:05 , Matt Verri

76 mins: BRILLIANT SAVE!

That was nearly the moment for England. Corner comes in, Daly completely unmarked and powers a header at goal from six yards out.

Nnadozie parries it out and Russo can’t do enough with the rebound.

10:03 , Matt Verri

74 mins: Looked to be her chest that Earps was holding, but she’s back up now and fine to continue. That gave both coaches a chance to call their players over for a team talk.

Nigeria continue to look so solid at the back, Russo robbed of the ball as Daly plays it down the line.

10:01 , Matt Verri

71 mins: England really sloppy on the ball. Chance for them to counter, but Stanway fires it into Hemp’s heels as the winger turned to make a run in behind.

Nigeria win it back and they have a corner. Kanu once again wins the header, nodded towards the far corner but it’s comfortably wide.

Concern for England, Earps is down and needs some treatment.

09:59 , Matt Verri

69 mins: Pace of the match has just slowed down a bit. Neither side wanting to take many risks now with so much on the line - still 20 minutes left though. A long time to just try and play it safe.

The likes of Kelly, Toone and England still wait on the Lionesses bench.

09:55 , Matt Verri

66 mins: Bronze takes the throw-in quickly, held up well by Russo in the box.

Plays it to Stanway, she’s crowded out but the ball falls for Hemp. Shot is deflected over the bar for a corner, some encouragement for England.

Stanway tries to ping the corner to the back post where Bright is lurking, but it’s cut onto the roof of the net.

09:52 , Matt Verri

63 mins: Space finally seems to have opened up for James, as she combines nicely with Russo, but the Chelsea star loses the ball as she tries to chop inside.

Might be time for Wiegman to turn to her bench, England don’t really look like scoring.

09:49 , Matt Verri

60 mins: Stanway has space on the right to clip a cross into the box, James can’t jump high enough but Daly is there behind her.

Looks to cushion a volley into the top corner, difficult chance though and it’s sliced well wide in the end.

09:48 , Matt Verri

59 mins: Speaking of...

Oshoala is on for Nigeria, replacing Onumonu. Very much not what England wanted to see.

The Super Falcons will have even more of a threat up front now.

Simon Collings at Suncorp Stadium

09:45 , Matt Verri

Nigeria causing so many problems in attack - and they have got Oshoala to come on still...

09:45 , Matt Verri

56 mins: Ohale too keen this time, just pushes Hemp over. Unnecessary and it’s a free-kick in a good position for the Lionesses out wide.

Greenwood with a great ball in, Russo has space in the middle but she can’t direct the header on goal.

09:42 , Matt Verri

53 mins: It’s one-way traffic, Bright has to head the ball behind for a Nigeria corner. England continue to look second best.

Floated towards the back post, comes to nothing and England can clear the danger. James plays the ball down the line, Hemp unable to hold it up as Ohale comes across.

09:39 , Matt Verri

50 mins: James is having to drop so deep to get on the ball, picking it up off her centre-backs.

Here come Nigeria again, Ajibade with it on the edge of the box but she takes a heavy touch and the chance goes.

09:36 , Matt Verri

47 mins: More of the same!

Nigeria have flown out of the blocks, ball in from the left and Kanu wins the header at the back post. Looped at goal, bounces off the top of the bar and over.

Second time Nigeria have hit the woodwork.

Back underway!

09:34 , Matt Verri

Up and running in the second-half!

Will another 45 minutes be enough to settle this last-16 clash? Time to find out.

Simon Collings at Suncorp Stadium

09:30 , Matt Verri

The Lionesses have not got going and Nigeria will be very happy with that first-half. Looked threatening and, largely, kept England at bay.

Walsh has not really been in the game, England going long and bypassing her.

First-half stats

09:25 , Matt Verri

England had 60% of the ball in the first 45 minutes, but did not do enough with it.

Five shots from the Lionesses, compared to nine for Nigeria. No side has managed more than that in the first-half against England since Sarina Wiegman took charge.

Plumptre hit the bar and was then denied by Earps seconds later, while Carter and Bright have had to produce a number of big blocks too. Lots of questions for England to answer.

HT: England 0-0 Nigeria

09:20 , Matt Verri

Half-time in Brisbane.

Nigeria have been really impressive, hitting the woodwork through Plumptre, while Ajibade and Kanu have looked dangerous throughout.

England struggling, not creating much at all. Could have had a penalty, but overturned after a VAR review.

 (AP)
(AP)

09:18 , Matt Verri

45+3 mins: Better from England, Stanway moving out to the right and she plays the ball back inside to Bronze.

It’s a great pass, Bronze would have been in with a better touch but it’s heavy and she can’t prevent the ball rolling out for a goal-kick.

09:16 , Matt Verri

45+1 mins: Four minutes added on.

Surprised it isn’t more, going by current standards both in this tournament and across England over the weekend.

09:14 , Matt Verri

44 mins: Hemp skips into space on the left, puts the ball into the box.

There’s nobody there for England, but Nnadozie is not convincing at all in shovelling it away. Fortunately for her, the ball drops to a green shirt.

09:13 , Matt Verri

42 mins: A few minutes of the 45 left, but there will be plenty of added time after that VAR review.

Nigeria will be delighted with how this first half has gone so far, the better side for much of it and could very easily be ahead. Have to ensure they don’t do anything silly before the break.

09:10 , Matt Verri

40 mins: Carter with a great ball down the side of the Nigeria defence, Stanway makes the run and wins another corner for the Lionesses.

Stanway it is to float the set-piece to the back post, headed out to the edge of the area and James slices her volley wide.

Simon Collings at Suncorp Stadium

09:08 , Matt Verri

I thought that penalty was a bit soft, but maybe not enough that VAR would overturn it.

Huge cheers when it did. Locals supporting the underdogs.

09:07 , Matt Verri

36 mins: Superb from Carter!

Bright with an initial block as Nigeria come forward again, Ajibade with the initial effort. Ball then falls for Ucheibe, but Carter is there and gets her body in the way brilliantly.

Plumptre wins the header from the resulting corner, flicked wide of the far post.

Overturned!

09:04 , Matt Verri

Referee checking whether the foul was actually in the area or not. Started outside, but there was still contact in the box.

NO PENALTY! Wow. Nigeria survive.

09:02 , Matt Verri

There was a bit of an elbow in the back from Ajibade, an unnecessary risk and she has been punished.

VAR check looked to be over, Stanway was about to take the penalty. But the referee is now over to look at the monitor.

PENALTY ENGLAND!

09:01 , Matt Verri

Out of nothing!

Ball floated into the box from deep, Daly goes down and the refere immediately points to the spot. Ajibade it was with the shove - not a huge amount of contact.

VAR will check it...

Simon Collings at Suncorp Stadium

09:00 , Matt Verri

Halimatu Ayinde is pretty much man-marking Lauren James.

The 21-year-old has barely had a kick and can’t get into the game.

08:58 , Matt Verri

28 mins: Again it will be Greenwood to take the set-piece.

Fired into the near post, falls for Daly and her volley is saved! Caught it decently enough but straight at the goalkeeper.

08:57 , Matt Verri

26 mins: Nigeria continue to look dangerous whenever they get forward, particularly in wide areas.

This shape gave England a lot of success against China last time out, but they don’t look too secure at either end of the pitch right now.

James tries to make something out of nothing, hooking a volley at goal from the edge of the area. Deflected over, corner.

08:53 , Matt Verri

23 mins: England just slowing things down a bit, happy to knock the ball around in defence.

They move it forward to James, she loses it but Nigeria return the favour. Demehin with a wild hack at the ball, basically misses the ball and Russo is in.

Gets the shot away early, comfortable enough save for Nnadozie.

Some strike!

08:52 , Matt Verri

08:50 , Matt Verri

20 mins: Nigeria can take so much confidence from this opening 20 minutes. Could easily be in front.

England looking to get back on top, James brings the ball forward down the left but again the green shirts are across to shut her down.

Simon Collings at Suncorp Stadium

08:48 , Matt Verri

England rocking a bit here. They’re trying to go long down the channels to Russo and Hemp, but it isn’t working.

Nigeria looking the better side.

08:47 , Matt Verri

16 mins: Nigeria have done a good job of keeping James quiet so far, she’s barely had a touch.

OFF THE BAR! Wow. Plumptre hammers an effort at goal from distance, smacks back off the woodwork. England hanging on for dear life, Nigeria firing the shots at goal.

Kanu’s shot is blocked, comes to Plumptre and Earps denies her this time. England very lucky not to be behind.

08:43 , Matt Verri

13 mins: Kanu drifts out to the right, lovely ball to play her in and the Nigeria forward wins the corner for her side. The Super Falcons are enjoying a much better spell now, right in this game.

Out-swinger, Alozie running onto it and powers the header at goal, blocked by Russo. That was on target.

08:40 , Matt Verri

10 mins: Ajibade cuts inside onto her right foot, nobody really in the box but she whips the ball to the back post... Earps palms it away for a corner. She was taking no risks there.

About 15 players surrounding Earps as the ball is floated into the middle from the Nigeria corner, drops on the edge of the box and James hacks it away.

Simon Collings at Suncorp Stadium

08:39 , Matt Verri

Strange atmosphere here so far. It’s all a bit flat.

Maybe it’s the fact it’s a 5.30pm kick-off on a Monday, but the crowd need something to get them going.

08:37 , Matt Verri

7 mins: Super Falcons are yet to really get going, but nothing in the way of clear cut chances for England yet.

James is being quickly closed down whenever she gets on the ball, green shirts swiftly over to swarm her.

08:35 , Matt Verri

4 mins: Match has been played entirely in the Nigeria half so far and England have their first corner, a long throw from Bronze is turned behind.

Greenwood over to take it, whipped to the back post and Nnadozie just about gets enough on it as she comes off her line to intervene.

08:32 , Matt Verri

2 mins: Stanway fouled in the opening minute of the match, early chance for England to put something into the box. Aimed towards Bright, but Nigeria can clear the danger.

The Lionesses are indeed lined up as they were against China, the back-three system on show again.

KICK-OFF!

Wiegman on Nigeria threat

08:18 , Matt Verri

Sarina Wiegman has insisted nobody in an England shirt will be taking anything for granted against Nigeria, with the Lionesses boss confident her side are ready for the challenge ahead.

“We’ve not had an easy game at all and that’s what we expect, that it will be very competitive and we need to be at our best,” Wiegman said. “Everyone who plays us wants to beat us.

“The games have been very competitive. Nobody can be complacent because that’s inappropriate. I think Nigeria have done really well in this tournament and were in a very hard group. We all saw they did very well.

“They are an athletic team, quick in the transition and also want to play. We are aware of their strengths. What we will try to do is exploit their weaknesses.”

England full of confidence

08:06 , Matt Verri

It was not a hugely convincing start to the tournament from England, with back-to-back 1-0 wins over Haiti and Denmark.

A change of shape against China last time out proved a brilliant decision from Sarina Wiegman, as the Lionesses finally clicked into gear with a 6-1 victory.

They will be on a high after that performance and result - enjoy the goals from that match below!

Waldrum: Nigeria can be a world power

07:51 , Matt Verri

Nigeria head coach Randy Waldrum believes his side can become a world power in women’s football and beating England would have a transformational impact on the country.

The Super Falcons have impressed on their journey to the knockouts, unbeaten in the group stage including a win over co-hosts Australia. That was achieved despite a disrupted build-up, with Waldrum revealing on the eve of the tournament he and players hadn’t been paid.

“I’m just giving the credit to the players, it’s something that’s inside them,” said Waldrum. “It’s in their DNA to compete and overcome obstacles because that’s what they’ve done through their careers.

“Nigeria could be a world power if we start to do things properly and invest like so many other nations need to do as well.

“It would be a huge win [if Nigeria beat England]. Obviously, with what we’ve accomplished, Nigeria is buzzing again, from what I understand. It could be transformational in a lot of different ways.”

How the knockout stages are looking

07:39 , Matt Verri

Four teams have already booked their spots in the quarter-finals of the Women’s World Cup.

Spain will take on the Netherlands, after both picked up comfortable last-16 wins, while Japan go up against Sweden, who knocked out defending champions USA on penalties yesterday.

England on the other side of the draw to that, and will face either Colombia or Jamaica in the quarter-finals should they beat Nigeria this morning.

Win that and it would then be Australia, Denmark, France or Morocco in the semi-finals.
