Exclusive: EastEnders' Jamie Borthwick on emotional future of Lola story

EastEnders spoilers follow.

EastEnders star Jamie Borthwick has discussed the future of the show's emotional new Lola Pearce story.

Show bosses recently announced that Lola will be diagnosed with a brain tumour this autumn. The BBC soap has been consulting with Brain Tumour Research and Macmillan Cancer Support while working on the scenes.

The plot begins on screen next week, as Lola has a seizure and is rushed to hospital. Danielle Harold, who plays Lola, has already confirmed that she'll ultimately be leaving EastEnders at the end of the storyline.

Speaking exclusively to Digital Spy on the red carpet at the Inside Soap Awards 2022 this week, Jamie – who plays Lola's boyfriend Jay Brown – hinted that the storyline has a long way to go.

He told us: "It's been busy, long days, tough, hard work but really rewarding. I don't even think we've touched the sides on it [yet] – and that's a bit worrying, really! It means there's loads more hard work to come, but it's good."

Jamie backed the decision to reunite Jay and Lola as a couple before the storyline began.

He added: "Me and Danielle have been in each other's lives for years. I'm like her brother, she's like my sister.

"We've got each other's backs. It's just nice to be with someone who you're incredibly comfortable with."

Danielle also discussed the importance of EastEnders portraying the storyline accurately and realistically with help from the charities.

She said: "There's loads more to come. It's been really emotional, really tough. It's a really hard storyline to do, what with it meaning so much to so many people, so we're trying to make sure we get all the points and beats right. It's been really emotional, really hard.

"It's always scary when you're asked to do a big storyline like this, that so many people are going through. It's such a real subject. I was really nervous and I just hope that I've done it justice."
