Exclusive: Hollyoaks star says fans will be shocked in Cleo and Abe story

Hollyoaks spoilers follow.

Hollyoaks star Nadine Mulkerrin has teased more dark twists in Cleo and Abe story.

Cleo is currently in a relationship with newcomer Abe, but viewers have seen some worrying signs that she could be heading for danger.

Abe has repeatedly controlled and gaslighted Cleo in recent episodes, and also lashed out at her in disturbing scenes last week.

He has also orchestrated his young brother Arlo's disappearance, and has set up his mum Marie so she looks responsible.

Speaking exclusively to Digital Spy about Cleo's true feelings for Abe, Nadine – who plays her – said: " I think Cleo just wants to be loved. She still probably has a lot of childhood trauma that she’s still not fully dealt with – she needs some therapy.

"She puts far too much onus on being with a man and getting happiness from being in a relationship. But if she was my sister I’d be very concerned about her behaviour, jumping from man to man, but these are the stories we tell because people out there do act like this, especially if you’ve been a victim of abuse as a child, and she develops unhealthy relationships.

"I think she’ll always have a special connection with Joel, but I do think that she’s just desperate for her and Abe to work out."

Nadine continued: " I think [her relationship with Abe] is really quite worrying and we’ve got lots of red flags happening. This is the classic tropes of sort of an abusive relationship – it doesn’t have to be obvious, it can be controlling and coercive control.

" So yes, I think she is in danger and my advice would be to get out of there."

Nadine also reckons that fans will 'be left screaming' at her alter-ego as the story intensifies.

Speaking about what's coming up, Nadine said: "Lots of exciting things! I’ve been super busy since I’ve got back.

"There's lots more sort of stuff with Abe. I don’t want to say too much, but he can’t really keep a lid on his anger coming down the line and we sort of see his mask slip slightly, and the audience should be left screaming ‘Cleo just see him for what he is and get out of there’.

"I think that’s the story we’re telling though – how sometimes something can be right in front of your eyes but you can’t see it and you’re asking yourself, 'Am I going crazy?'.

"He’s so good at gaslighting her and love bombing her and manipulating her, so he is a very dangerous individual."

Hollyoaks streams first online via Channel 4 each weekday at 7.30pm. Episodes then air on E4 the following day, before getting their YouTube premiere a week after that.
