Exclusive: The Witcher’s Anya Chalotra talks “different phase” for character in season 3
The Witcher star Anya Chalotra has opened up about a "different phase" for her character Yennefer of Vengerberg in season 3.
The first part of the latest season of the hit Netflix fantasy launches today, reuniting fans with favourites including Chalotra's sorceress, Geralt (Henry Cavill) and Ciri (Freya Allan).
Speaking exclusively to Digital Spy about Yennefer's growing mother/daughter-like relationship with Ciri in the new episodes, the actress said she "loved going there with Yennefer".

"I think she’s been very self-centred for a long part of her life, and meeting Ciri, and teaching her magic, and organically growing that mother/daughter relationship, really helps Yennefer to move into a different phase, and one that is less self-centred," Chalotra explained.
"Her ego has definitely dropped. She’s laid bare in a way that she hasn’t been in before, and is probably more vulnerable than she’s ever been before.
"I mean, she’s vulnerable in every season, but in a very different way – in a way that really shows her strength, I think. I really enjoyed exploring that part of her relationship."

Speaking further on trusting that sort of relationship with Yennefer, Allan admitted: "I mean, it was hard. Going straight into season 3 with everything that had happened at the end of season 2, and without getting to kind of live through the character’s year that had passed, was a weird place to be, you know?
"We hadn’t really got to properly experience that. We just had to kind of think about it. I think it was difficult."
"In the way that the storyline went, I had to kind of delve into the trust more quickly than Geralt," she added. "Geralt got time to show that lack of trust, and we kind of had to do that with one scene that was very rushed on the filming day."
The Witcher seasons 1-2 are now streaming on Netflix. Season 3 volume 1 is out now, and volume 2 premieres on 27 July 2023. Spin-off The Witcher: Blood Origin is also streaming on Netflix.
