Putting Mjolnir aside, Thor star Chris Hemsworth is due to once again head to Netflix in Extraction 2, the follow-up to his hugely popular first outing as action star Tyler Rake.

Released in 2020, Extraction was directed by stunt-man-turned-director Sam Hargrave and written by Joe Russo, one half of Avengers: Infinity War and Endgame directorial duo the Russo Brothers.

Based on Andre Parks’ graphic novel Ciudad, Extraction saw Hemsworth star as a mercenary-for-hire tasked with the perilous mission of extracting the kidnapped child of an imprisoned crime lord.

Reviews for Extraction 2 are in and by all accounts, Hemsworth has established himself as the lead of a promising new action thriller franchise.

Jason Bourne better watch out – in fact, some of the movie's critiques make this direct comparison, with The Telegraph saying that the Thor star is now the proud owner of his own Bourne Supremacy-type actioner.

Meanwhile, The Wrap praised the movie’s fleet-of-foot storytelling, with IndieWire making the argument that the movie is too explosive to be contained on mere tellies – instead suggesting that Extraction 2’s true home is on the big screen.

As it stands, the film has a stellar 84% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes.

Following his last mission which took place largely in Bangladesh, Rake is deployed on a new black-ops adventure that will take him across Europe.

After being hired to extract a family from the clutches of a ruthless Georgian gangster, Rake heads inside the brutal prison in which they are being held. However, when he finally reaches them, things don’t exactly go to plan, plunging him into an extra level of danger, action and suspense.

Filming for Extraction 2 began in late 2021 and lasted until spring 2022, shooting extensive action sequences across Prague.

Part one director Hargrave returns to direct a script once again penned by Joe Russo, with Anthony Russo joining his filmmaking brother for producer duties.

Joining Hemsworth’s Rake is Adam Bessa, who reprises his role from the first film as Yaz, with fellow returning actor and Maleficent: Misstress of Evil player Rayna Campbell as Ruthie.

Gaolshifteh Farahani also returns, once again playing Rake’s mercenary partner Nik Khn, while Georgian actress and model Tinatin Dalakishvili is also due to make an appearance.

Idris Elba will also be part of the Extraction 2 cast. The Luther star retweeted a clip from the movie and replying to Hemsworth: “Yes brother.”

Soon afterwards, Hemsworth shared the same clip. While little is known about Elba’s role, we do know that he’s cryptically called The Man in the Suit and is responsible for sending Hemsworth’s Rake on new missions.

“Rake. You are a legend,” says Elba’s character in the short clip. “I have to say, mate, you’re living up to the hype. Rake. That’s such a fun name to say.”

Extraction 2 debuts on Netflix on 16 June.
