F1 reveal new London venue after Madrid and Vienna success

The Formula 1 Exhibition is moving to the ExCeL centre in London this summer after successful editions in Madrid and Vienna.

The critically acclaimed show will pay homage to the history and tradition of the British Grand Prix, as well as feature state-of-the-art simulators and a design lab, taking a deep dive into the technology of an F1 car.

The fourth edition of the exhibition – following a successful North American version in Toronto too – will open on 23 August, less than a month after the ExCeL hosts the finale to the 2024 Formula E season.

Among the other elements showcased at the exhibition will be Romain Grosjean’s burnt-out Haas car from his fiery crash at the 2020 Bahrain Grand Prix, with more cars and attractions to be announced in due course.

The inaugural show opened in Madrid last year and was the biggest temporary show of the year in the Spanish capital, while Vienna has seen ticket sales surpass that of Madrid in the last few weeks.

“It’s been incredible to see how fans around the world have reacted to the exhibition since opening last year,” Timothy Harvey, lead curator and producer of the Formula 1 Exhibition, said.

“London was always going to be an incredibly special location for us, so I am looking forward to what’s to come. Each show recognises the national heritage of its host location, and as Britain is the home of racing this will be a really special show.

F1 chief commercial officer Emily Prazer added: ““It’s fitting to bring The F1 Exhibition to the UK capital and pay tribute to the British teams, drivers and personalities who have etched themselves into F1 history.

“The F1 Exhibition has been incredibly popular since its launch in Madrid, and successful runs in Vienna and Toronto prove that it is a great way to engage with both hardcore fans and new audiences, whilst extending F1’s reach beyond the racetrack.

“London is one of the most cultural vibrant cities in the world, and we look forward to welcoming visitors from around the world to the show.”

I think that is the main thing that pulls us together."First invented in Finland more than a decade ago, hobby horsing has taken off at a gallop across the globe. "It is growing every year," said Julia Mikkonen, the chair of the Finnish hobby horse association.This year's championship was "the biggest we have had so far", she added.Beyond the whimsy, great strength and skill is required to jump the obstacles while holding the hobby horse. Some top competitors could give elite hurdlers or gymnasts a run for their money."If you jump over obstacles your hip mobility has to be absolutely insane," said Mikkonen, 20, with some fences up to 110 centimetres (3.6 feet) tall. - 10,000 enthusiasts -"Of course we are all dreaming of having a world championship one day," said Mikkonen, who estimates there are around 10,000 hobby horsers globally."I am still a bit breathless but I am happy with my performance", said 19-year-old Jojo Hanninen as she sat down after her dressage event. To succeed in the sport you have to channel your inner centaur, she said."In hobby horsing, my legs are the horse... I am both horse and human," she said. Hanninen's hobby horse is a grey called Toope, with glittery reins and pink ribbons adorning its white mane.- Welcoming community -Competitors go to great lengths with their horses -- which are also exhibited and judged -- modelling and sewing the heads and adorning them with decorations.  "Hobby horses are art," said Arlin, who makes her own.With the cheers of the crowd still ringing in her ears after an impressive show jumping round, she hailed the sport as "the best hobby ever"."You are doing so many things with your hands, brain and the whole body."Like many of her peers, Arlin found hobby horsing through play as a child. "But the older I became, it became more serious," said the rider, who trains by riding real horses, working out in the gym and doing pole dancing.Rainbow flags in the arena reflected the tolerant values underpinning the community.   "Horses are mostly seen as a girls' sport, but that is not correct.
