Fans hit funding goal for 'Veronica Mars' movie in less than 12 hours

Rob Thomas and Kristen Bell's initiative on Kickstarter was a success. It only took 10 hours for fans to pledge the $2M needed for a movie based on the TV show "Veronica Mars."

The creator of the series, Rob Thomas, had set a one-month deadline (April 12) for the "Veronica Mars" movie crowdfunding campaign on Kickstarter. The target was reached in record time thanks to fans of the series, which was canceled in 2007 after three seasons.

The success of the campaign means that the movie is now in pre-production with the support of Warner Bros. The studio owns the rights to the series and had so far been reluctant to fund the movie the conventional way.

Rob Thomas plans to start filming this summer for a 2014 release. Kristen Bell will reprise her role as Veronica Mars in the movie. The young detective will return to Neptune -- where the series was set -- a few years after high school.

The funding campaign will remain active on Kickstarter until April 12. As Thomas explained in the note of intent, the funds raised beyond the required $2M will be used to make the film more spectacular.

Kickstarter is a participative funding platform that allows creators to find funding for projects as varied as movies, albums and video games consoles. As far as movies go, "Veronica Mars" may have set a record but it isn't a first. Charlie Kaufmann raised the $200,000 he needed for his animated short film "Anomalisa" through crowdfunding.
