Fans queue from 5am at Suntec City to catch Song Joong-ki
Several hundred fans flooded the North Atrium of Suntec Tower Two on Tuesday evening (8 August) to catch a glimpse of South Korean star Song Joong-ki during a meet-and-greet session, part of promotions for his upcoming movie The Battleship Island.
Some had even confessed to arriving at the venue from as early as 5am – to secure a front row spot in the standing area – when asked by the emcee who was warming up the crowd prior to the star’s arrival.
Fans were also seen leaning against the glass panels on the second and third floors to catch a glimpse of the actor, whose popularity skyrocketed following the Korean drama “Descendants of the Sun”. The 31-year-old Asian heartthrob was greeted by screaming fans when he arrived after 7pm, together with co-stars Hwang Jung-min, So Ji-Sub and director Ryoo Seung-wan.
While sharing their thoughts about the upcoming movie (which will be out in Singapore on 17 Aug), Song was asked how he had dealt with “difficult” scenes in the war film, such as having to appear topless, “sweaty” and have “lots of mud on his body”.
“Indeed there were challenges but it was also absolutely necessary to bring out the reality of the story to the big screen,” he said.
Song plays Park Moo-young, a member of the Korean independence movement, and appears late in the movie. The Battleship Island is based on a true story and set during the Japanese occupation era.
“I don’t have any complaints about appearing in the movie late because I thought it was, by the director’s view, to bring out the best of the character and to develop the storyline better,” added Song, who was clad in black and wearing dark green loafers.
All four of them were aware that Singapore would be celebrating the country’s National Day the following day, wishing happy celebrations to fans at the venue.
“August 9 is the National Day of Singapore right? This movie, the story, ends in 1945. (Even for Singapore), it’s very meaningful indeed,” said Ryoo. Similar to Korea, the year 1945 marked the end of Japanese occupation in Singapore as well.
After the meet-and-great session the director and stars of The Battleship Island proceeded to Marina Bay Sands for a private red carpet event.
