Fatal accident in Tampines: Driver arrested after two die from multiple-vehicle collision, including JC student
Another 57-year-old female van passenger died, while six others were sent to various hospitals as footages surface online
SINGAPORE — The man who was driving the Saab car allegedly involved in a six-vehicle crash in Tampines on Monday (22 April) has been arrested.
Police said the 42-year-old driver, who was assisting with investigations earlier, was arrested on Wednesday for dangerous driving causing death. His driving licence has also been suspended with immediate effect.
He had been admitted to hospital but was discharged on Wednesday. Police investigations into the incident are ongoing.
Two people were killed in a road traffic accident involving four cars, a van and a minibus at the junction of Tampines Avenue 1 and Tampines Avenue 4 on 22 April.
Police told Yahoo Southeast Asia that a 17-year-old female car passenger and a 57-year-old female van passenger were taken to hospital, where they subsequently died.
The Straits Times confirmed that Norzihan Juwahib, 57, and Afifah Munirah Muhammad Azril, 17, were killed.
Temasek JC student died
According to the outlet, one of the deceased was a passenger in a car which had overturned during the crash. Afifah was as a first-year student from Temasek Junior College (TJC), which is situated at Tampines Avenue 9. The teenager was reportedly on her way to participate in the annual TJC Run when the accident occurred.
In response to Yahoo's queries on Monday, the principal of TJC, Liu Earnler, confirmed the news of the death. He said the school is "deeply saddened by the loss of one of our students".
"The school has been in touch with the family of the student and will render additional support to students and staff who may be affected by this incident during this difficult period," he added.
Second victim reportedly affiliated with pest control firm
Norzihan is reported to have been in a van affiliated with First Choice Pest Specialist, a pest control firm located at 9002 Tampines Street 93, according to The Straits Times.
The police added that three male car drivers, aged between 42 and 48 as well as a 64-year-old male van driver, an 11-year-old male car passenger, and an 11-year-old male minibus passenger were also transported to various hospitals while conscious. The 42-year-old male car driver is also assisting the police with investigations.
Meanwhile, another female car driver and a male van passenger sought medical attention at the hospital independently.
Trapped leg under the wheel of a car
In response to queries from Yahoo Southeast Asia, the Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF) said the accident took place at about 7.07am.
"Upon SCDF's arrival, a person was lying on the road with one leg trapped under the wheel of a car. SCDF used hydraulic rescue equipment to free the person's leg," it said.
SCDF added that four individuals were transported to Changi General Hospital, two to Tan Tock Seng Hospital, and two others to KK Women's and Children's Hospital.
"A few members of the public, including a nurse and two off-duty SCDF officers, had rendered assistance to the injured persons following the accident. SCDF will be reaching out to commend them for their public spiritedness," it added.
Video of aftermath shared on Instagram
A video shared on Instagram by user Kary Tan on Monday showcased the aftermath of the incident, displaying the wreckage of a vehicle on the ground.
The footage also showed a police car, ambulance, and personnel from both SCDF and the police force present at the scene.
Furthermore, other photos posted by SG Road Vigilante on Facebook captured moments from the accident, showing a black car overturned with its doors flung open in the middle of the road.
