The shocking murder of a father and son in the usually peaceful HDB heartland of Kovan -- by a former Singapore cop no less -- grabbed national headlines in July.

How the case unfolded was fitting of a crime novel: two dead bodies discovered less than 1km apart, with one of them dragged along the road by car in broad daylight, reported eyewitnesses.

42-year-old Tan Chee Heong, a director and shareholder at an electronics company, was finally recovered near Kovan MRT station.

Following a trail of blood, the police ended up at a house at 14J Hillside Drive, where they found his father, 66-year-old Tan Boon Sin, who died of numerous slash wounds.

A nationwide manhunt was launched for a male suspect who had fled the scene. Three days later, former Singapore Police Force senior staff sergeant, Iskandar bin Rahmat, 34, was picked up with the help of Malaysian police, at Danga Bay in Johor.

A veteran of the SPF for 14 years, it was revealed he was serving at the Bedok police station and was the investigating officer when Tan Boon Sin made a theft report nine months earlier, in November 2012.

A bankrupt struggling under debt, Iskandar was charged with two counts of murder on 15 July.

On 26 July, Iskandar told his lawyers that he wanted to claim trial to all charges against him, according to a report by The Straits Times. His trial is set tor March next year.
