Will Ferrell Says He's 'So Proud' of “Anchorman”'s 'Legacy' as the Film Celebrates Its 20th Anniversary (Exclusive)

"And I think at the time, we couldn't believe we were getting to make such a weird, bizarre movie,” the star told PEOPLE

Great Odin's raven! Anchorman is two decades old — and Will Ferrell is still as “proud” as ever.

The beloved film, whose full title is Anchorman: The Legend of Ron Burgundy, stars Ferrell, 56, as the titular broadcaster alongside a news team comprised of Steve Carell, Paul Rudd, Christina Applegate and David Koechner.

Though he hasn’t stepped back into Burgundy’s politically incorrect shoes since the film’s 2013 sequel, Anchorman 2: The Legend Continues — on the big screen, at least — Ferrell is just as proud of the movie on its 20th anniversary as he was when it was first released.

Reflecting on the Adam McKay-directed movie at the New York City premiere of Despicable Me 4 on Sunday, June 9, the comedy legend told PEOPLE, “I'm so proud of the legacy.”

“And I think at the time, we couldn't believe we were getting to make such a weird, bizarre movie,” he added. “So I'm just so happy that it has kind of stayed in the zeitgeist all these years.”

To help keep the “bizarre” film in the forefront of people’s minds, Ferrell has also brought Burgundy out from behind his news desk and into the real world on occasion.

Most recently, the actor became the foul-mouthed, mustached anchorman — not to report the news or brawl with some fellow journalists, but to roast Tom Brady.

Ferrell reprised the iconic role for Netflix's Greatest Roast of All Time: Tom Brady last month, where he was introduced as “a living legend, a world-class lover and the No. 1 news anchor in all of San Diego."

The Blades of Glory actor began his segment at the roast with, “My name is Ron Burgundy. I am a very big deal but tonight is not about me. We are here to honor a champion of the gridiron, a great American, a father and a sexy man, a true patriot — until he was not of course."

Ferrell (as Burgundy) also made constant references to Brady’s “gorgeous” looks, from his cheekbones and “million-watt smile” to his eyes, noting, “A person could get lost in those eyes and right now I am that person.”

"Ron, pull it together. You’re a straight man," he told himself at the Netflix podium. "He’s making you question your sexuality. Stop looking at him. You’re here to make fun of him. Not fall in love. Concentrate!"

Also at the Despicable Me 4 premiere, Ferrell channeled Burgundy by beginning his campaign for this year’s PEOPLE's Sexiest Man Alive.

On the red carpet, the star said he’s “planting the seeds” to end up on the cover of the iconic issue “because you guys never have comedians."

"So get it going internally, all right? Sexiest Man,” he added.
