Final Fantasy, Fallout, Assassin's Creed, Jurassic World coming to Magic: The Gathering

In addition to the big name collaborations, publisher Wizards of the Coast also announced more upcoming sets, including Modern Horizons 3.

Magic: The Gathering fans, you'll want to hold on to your seats for this one.

Wizards of the Coast on Saturday (5 August) announced a slew of big name IPs tying up with the card game's Universes Beyond settings at Gen Con, the place where a lot of fans first discovered Magic back in 1993.

After the success of bringing The Lord of the Rings to Magic, including making one lucky fan's day, and ahead of the upcoming Doctor Who set, Wizards dropped the deets on tie ups with game franchises Final Fantasy, Fallout and Assassin's Creed.

The Assassin's Creed Universes Beyond set, in collaboration with Ubisoft, will feature all the franchise's games released to date, with "mechanically unique" cards, as well as reprints which feature new artwork.

Hopefully, fan favourites like Ezio and Kassandra make an appearance, and prove as much of a commanding presence on cardboard as they are in the franchise's games.

While Assassin's Creed Mirage hasn't hit the market just yet, since the main character of that game was already introduced in Assassin's Creed Valhalla, we're guessing some characters and scenes can make an appearance.

Meanwhile, the collaboration with Bethesda Softworks on Fallout will see themed Commander decks releasing in 2024, bringing the retro-futuristic post apocalyptic Wasteland to Magic: The Gathering players.

We're certain there will be lots of Super Mutants, Ghouls and Deathclaws, as well as Power Armor, hopefully complete with Pip-Boys too and the flavour text the franchise is so known for.

For Final Fantasy, Square Enix's famed Japanese RPG franchise, Wizards revealed that the 2025 set will including characters and stories from each of the main Final Fantasy games that have been released, from the original 1987 game all the way up to this year's Final Fantasy XVI. Here's hoping to many, many Chocobos.

Given the breadth of characters that Wizards could tap on from the Final Fantasy IP (just take a glance at the character roster of any Final Fantasy mobile gacha game), it's no surprise that the Hasbro subsidiary is calling this their "tentpole booster release" for 2025.

And for those who liked the big giant dinos of Ixalan and Ikoria, Wizards also has a collaboration with Universal Picture's Jurassic World franchise.

This comes with the release of the Lost Caverns of Ixalan set in Q4 2023, with cards that will feature iconic characters and scenes from the six feature films in the franchise.

Beyond these announcements, Wizards also revealed the road map for Magic: The Gathering all the way up to 2026, including announcements like Modern Horizons 3, remastered sets from Ravnica and Innistrad, as well as a "cute and cozy new world" called Bloomburrow, which features anthropomorphic animal friends instead of humans, among others.

Not entirely sure if we'd consider that monstrous wolf that looks part volcano "cute and cozy", though.

With so many upcoming sets, it's likely that collectors, casuals and more advanced players will all have something to look forward to in the next few years.
