Final Fantasy Publisher Square Enix to ‘Aggressively Pursue a Multiplatform Strategy’
Square Enix is one of the biggest video game companies in the world, and the studio and publisher is planning some changes to its business. Going forward, the Final Fantasy creator is going to be shifting its tactics, which will include embracing multiple platforms.
As part of a strategy to “diversify earnings opportunities”
The news comes from the latest earnings report from Square Enix, which outlines profits and losses between last year and the end of this financial year.
In an effort to “build an environment where more customers can enjoy our titles,” the Japanese company will “aggressively pursue a multiplatform strategy.” This includes looking towards Nintendo, PlayStation, Xbox, and PC as viable platforms to do business on.
To add to this, Square Enix will also “strive to maximize the acquisition of new users when launching a title,” as well as build “continuous customer contact points of our titles by stepping up digital sales.”
The report outlines that “consolidated sales” for the fiscal year, which ended March 31, 2024, have increased, with particular reference to Final Fantasy 16, Final Fantasy Pixel Master, and Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth.
However, it then went on to say that “operating losses grew due to higher development cost amortization and advertising expenses, as well as higher content valuation losses versus the previous fiscal year.”
The company has been part of the industry for years. It was a merger between developer Square – or SquareSoft – which began in 1987, and publisher Enix. The two joined forces in 2003. Most will be aware of the aforementioned Final Fantasy series, but it’s also responsible for Kingdom Hearts, Chrono Trigger, Dragon Quest, and more.
In any case, it looks like Square Enix is doing what it can to maintain its stance as one of the biggest names in gaming, and this shift to multiplatform will likely have a focus on “major franchises and AAA titles, including catalog titles.”
