Fire rips through 500 tonnes of waste sending huge plumes of smoke over north London

Dozens of firefighters are battling a major fire at a waste recycling centre in north London.

Around 500 tonnes of mixed waste were alight on Thursday morning in a single-storey bay on Nobel Road, Edmonton.

London Fire Brigade said ten fire engines and around 70 firefighters were responding to the blaze.

Huge plumes of black smoke were sent high into the sky. One person posted a dramatic video of a large column of smoke from the North Circular.

Residents in the local area have been advised to keep doors and windows shut due to the amount of smoke being produced.

Firefighters are using a 32-metre ladder to attack the fire from above. The brigade's drone team has also been deployed to the incident giving an aerial view of the scene.

Nobel Road is closed between Thornton Road and Kynoch Road, with traffic along the A1055 likely to be impacted, LFB said in a statement.

Firefighters were alerted to the blaze at 3.33am and crews from Edmonton, Enfield, Chingford, and surrounding fire stations are at the scene.

The cause of the fire is not yet known.
